Battle.net Desktop Client
The new Battle.net desktop client has been tested internally for some time now. It appears that testing is nearly here, as the Battle.net support site has been updated with related help articles.

Currently only a Windows version has appeared for testing, but by the looks of the jobs page, a OS X version is in development as well. Unfortunately we are only able to see the offline mode for now, but there are a lot of features in the mockups.

Keep in mind this is not an official preview, and many, many, many things will change before release.

  • This replaces the launcher for all Blizzard games, and works similar to the current launchers, with background updates, repair tool, and more.
  • Chat with Battle.net friends across every Battle.net enabled game.
  • News - You can see all of the news from the various Battle.net game sites in the client.
  • Store - NYI?
  • Forums - NYI?
  • Profiles - NYI?

Now if only this were added to "trade" or whatever chan people like to use to find pugs... would make it much easier to form groups together.

PS: Steam takes 100MB when minimized, and the Battle.net app takes up 97MB when minimized. There's not as much of a difference as you claim there is, it differs for everyone.
Steam uses about 58Mb when minimized for me...no idea how you make it use almost double that

I'd been wanting something like this for a while, glad they've finally started developing one

Sweet...one more program to monitor everything I do, store my information to sell to anyone, and generally serves a limited purpose. All we have to do now is wait for our robot overlords to create the program that runs the programs that run the programs. One program to rule them all and in the darkness bind them.

This way you log onto one program and it runs steam, battlenet, origin, raptr, and every other 3rd party gaming interface ever made. It also will gradually suck the essence of your soul into its databank and erase your identity.
    ------------------------
With that little bit out of the way, positives:

-Clears up my desktop a bit
-Hopefully puts all account services and purchases on the app so I can go to one place for everything I ever need to do, whether it's renew a sub, buy a game, change a race, and order physical merch.
-not needing to log on to each game individually with the same info/authenticator.
    -looks flashy

Is it needed? No, not really. Will it make the experience a little more enjoyable? Yes.

oh this is new (to me at least),

it looks like Blizzard is setting up Battlenet to work like steam and it backs up the rumors that Blizzard is opening Battlenet to 3rd party developers.

Battle.net is turning into Valve's Steam? Holy bleep.

    Do not want.

    Ever.

I'm not saying it's unlikely, but where are people reading about it being single sign on? How would you select WoW license? I guess they could put that in the desktop client.

Very nice client. It seems I don't have to work on my own launcher for all Blizz Games anymore.
But a beta invite would be nice.

The improved Launcher for WoW can be found on WoWInterface and is called "WoW Launcher PLUS".

I use steam, origin and desura why not add a 4th game manager. Will be nice to be online in battle.net and see what people are up to without having to actually log into a game.

I hope we can play WoW without that thing, I hate using software to start another software.

Finally yes! I suggested that thing like 3 years ago when SC2 came out! An homogenized login app for all games where you would just click and launch any of the games without needing to re-log ...seriously i did suggested it! I hope we can chat with B.net friends in it without needing to open any game and apparently it will be capable of that.

    Oh so happy! XD

You already do that, but instead of one launcher for each game, you will have just one for all.

Now tell us how a Battle.net Launcher replacement for all Blizzard games relates in any way to a WoW patch?

Another way? You mean Blizzard already uses hundreds of ways to bombards us with ads?.....wait...no they don't do that at all.

Blizzard doesn't rely on ads because they're getting paid via subscriptions?
Only companies that don't have a continual source of income rely on ads?
Even before WoW, Blizzard still didn't rely on ads in their web presence?

I may be completely wrong, buy I believe that when you log into Diablo I, Battle.net shows banner ads for other things in addition to Blizzard stuff. My memory us foggy and I haven't played it in a couple years, though.
