Blizzard closes down Diablo 3 Auction House on March 18, 2014
Originally Posted by Blizzard Entertainment
When we initially designed and implemented the auction houses, the driving goal was to provide a convenient and secure system for trades. But as we've mentioned on different occasions, it became increasingly clear that despite the benefits of the AH system and the fact that many players around the world use it, it ultimately undermines Diablo's core game play: kill monsters to get cool loot. With that in mind, we want to let everyone know that we've decided to remove the gold and real-money auction house system from Diablo III.

We feel that this move along with the Loot 2.0 system being developed concurrently with Reaper of Souls™ will result in a much more rewarding game experience for our players.

We're working out the details of how the auction house system will be shut down, but we wanted to share the news as soon as we made the decision in order to give everyone as much advance notice as possible. Please note that the shutdown will occur on March 18, 2014. We will keep everyone informed as we work through this process.

Josh Mosqueira and I wanted to provide everyone with a little more information behind this decision, so please have a look at the video, and stay tuned to this site for further updates in the months ahead.

    Yeah, no.

    1. A lot of people have suggested removing the AH. From before the game even launched, actually.
    2. A lot of people suggested a ladder system.

Kripparrian is a good guy, but he's not a god.

    THIS IS AMAZING

I'm gonna pre-order 10 copies of the expansion just to show Blizzard how happy this makes me! Think of it as a gesture of good will, Blizzard! Now take my money! Take all of it!

    Weeeee!

That's actually a point I didn't think of - suppose they could now, right? It shows I haven't played in a while ^^

I cannot find the bluepost atm, but they mentioned before that they are testing the console version to see how the game works without the auction house, that wastwo months ago ago. They said they may remove the AH if it works well.

Doubt it...look out for D3 items in Blizzard's store...not sure whether to laugh or cry. This is not an altruistic action.... From a buisness standpoint - why maintain a complex feature that probably does not bring anywhere near as much revenue as an average cash shop, that can be implemented cross platform? Less headache, easy profit.

Quoted for truth. Inferno was terrible. Act II was a pain in the ass and act III just totally took the fun out of the game and made me stop for 6 months. Then I finally tried to buy some gear from the AH and I was able to finish all of Inferno that same day and I had fun again with the game. Especially with the MP system, it was nice to be able to choose a difficulty that felt good.

Another thing : what about all those patterns? Without the AH I would have like 2 pattern drops so far, but thanks to the AH I have almost all of the patterns in the game. Good luck trying to grind for all those patterns yourself.

    Such a stupid stupid decision.

First of all, if loot grinding isn't for you, then D3 isn't for you. Actually the entire dungeon crawling action rpg genre isn't for you.

Secondly, if you watched the video or payed attention at all you would know they are completely revamping the loot system (loot 2.0), making all of your objections here moot.

When you can progress more in 10 minutes on the AH than you can in months of game play, you have a problem.
Ever thought about all those people out there with a job and a family? People that can't spend tens of hours a week on D3? For me it was heaven to be able to play through normal, nightmare and hell and then buy gear to get through inferno. I never bought the best gear available, just gear that was good enough to let me get through MP5, so that it still proved a challenge.

It annoys me so much that so many games always favor teenagers and students and other people who have fuck all to do all day every day but sit on their ass and play games.

I tried Inferno on my main before I bought gear and it wasn't fun ... at ... all. I just drove me up the wall how hard packs of simple mobs were. It made me quit the game for 6 months. Sure I could have farmed for hundreds of hours and maybe I would have gotten a few nice items after a few months, but I'd rather play some other games as well in that time. The AH is just a useful tool for people who don't have time to farm all day to also get through the harder difficulty levels.

I love the Diablo games. I finished Diablo I 9 times, I finished Diablo II more times than I care to remember; when I was in college I grinded Diablo II for months, so you're wrong saying the dungeon crawling action rpg genre isn't for me.

But now I'm on the other side of the spectrum. Now I'm a working familyman with little time on his hands who can't afford to grind for months for gear. Now I prefer shorter games that I can actually finish in the time that I have available and instead of grinding for loot for months, I'd much rather play a few of the unopened games that are lying here in my drawer waiting for me to find time to play them.

It annoys me when people think it's cool to ignore the genre of the game and basically mess up it's core, just for it to be accessible to everyone.

Loot grinding is kinda what dungeon crawler are about and you still can play it pretty fine with a job and family, the game will just last that much longer if you don't invest much time in it.

This is very good news! I wonder will they let us create games now with our own names now in order to trade? Or will they come up with other means of trading.

I have nearly all patterns in game, and I've not bought a single one from the AH. You must not have played in awhile, but they greatly increased the drop chance of all patterns. Besides loot v2.0 is coming out, entirely revamping the loot. Less but better drops. The game doesn't need an AH if the loot is worthwhile like in D2.

Remember, "the loot system is not tuned around the Auction House"...

What a load of bollocks that was.

What about making it offline now?

I didn't go past the start of act 2. The story was just shit.

I cannot comprehend how they figured that out so late... After playing the game for a few hours and visiting AH just once it should be very clear.
But hell yeah it's about time.

Same, after 3 weeks of grinding i was finally "able" to go nightmare. Never got a reasonably good item.
Then came Act III, which was almost impossible at that time. Never found item that would sell on ah, so never could buy good stuff (cause that was too expensive).
After another month of grinding Act II i was finally able to step into Act III. (fist 3 weeks of that grind i didn't get a single upgrade, the last week i finally got lucky)
