Rose tinted glasses. Go watch some old anime. The frame rate is horribly bad and because they use cells, image quality isn't the highest either due scratches and stuff. Special effects like glowing stuff, depth of field ... etc. were a pain in the ass to create.

Computers really pushed anime production to a new level. No degradation of cells. Coloring via computer probably takes a lot less time. Mistakes can be easily corrected. Special effects ... the sky is the limit.
Internet forums are more for circlejerking (patting each other on the back) than actual discussion (exchange and analysis of information and points of view). Took me long enough to realise ...

A friend called me out on this, claiming you're never too old for such hobbies but it's a deep rooted insecurity that I'm not a real man even at this age.

Edit: I should've wrote "expected" instead of "forced" in the title.
I'm 35 and still enjoy gaming with my soon to be wife. Don't fear your hobbies, do what you want! However, I will say it never hurts to expand your experiences. You don't have to be a party machine, but make it a point to get out and do something social once in a while. Don't be afraid of letting your future evolve. You may still love anime and gaming in the future but find that you want to do it less as you find other things you enjoy.

BTW, I didn't actually really get into gaming until after college. I played some first person shooters, but time sink games like MMO's I couldn't have survived college with.

I was talking about the art in my post. Which is much worse and less detailed then in the past. Character designs are lame, and they all look the same. And due to less money in the industry animation looks worse aswell.

I don't really look at charts but yes, I do think most animes are bad, just like most things are bad in other mediums.

Like shit, you don't have to look further than Makoto Shinkai's work to rip his post apart, but i have a feeling he doesn't care anyway, or that he actually doesn't watch anime anymore to have any idea of what the animations is like today.
Comix Wave, KyoAni and Shaft all produce amazing stuff.
It's just the typical "everything was so much better back in my days" bullshit.

Except it's wrong, and i am going to cherry pick a little here now, but go and watch any recent work from Comix Wave and Makoto Shinkai, or anything by KyoAni for that matter.

You might like anime when it was usually traditionally made more, that's fine, i love plenty of shows from back then aswell.
But to say it was more detailed and the animations was better, is just straight up false.

For me it was anime age 22. Video games age 25.

Never,40's watch Anime and play video games all the time. ...like it has been said, grow up and realize that your hobbies, pass times ,what you enjoy have no expiration date.
I will probably play videogames and watch anime as long as my eyes work and my hands can still move a mouse, controller etc.

(ps.I have a good job,a house,a dog ...no kids because I do not want them....a GF ...because I do not need a wife...etc...so...uh oh...stereotype busted)

Be an adult, make your own choices, take care of your "Adult" stuff...be happy and to hell with other peoples "thoughts" on the matter.

Videogames id say never or until they start mostly to suck. Theres been fever games ive bought and played tough than in the good old 8 and 16 bit years.

Anime, i dont know, not many recent anime series that I can bare to watch to be honest. Theres usually one show thats pretty successful and then theres 10-20 lame shows that just copy it, or some basic anime tropes, and it just doesnt intrest me. There are some classics that never get old in my eyes like some Miyazaki films, and some of the older series, they just have this charm the newer series dont catch anymore.

Maybe im just grumpy old nostalgic guy. Maybe my time has just passed.

If you think a real man watches football, enjoys porn and smokes and drinks... Then you need to stop watching so many movies because you're becoming brainwashed.

    1. Football is a random hobby on par with anime
    2. Porn is whatever
    3. Smoking is something only losers do
    4. Drinking can be enjoyable, but is typically a waste of money. Don't feel bad for not partaking, it's entirely optional.

Absolutely never. Don't let others dictate what you should like, if it isn't overly unhealthy and damaging. Video games and anime in moderation is just fine, no matter the age. Also, love that CS Lewis quote!

"Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

    ― C.S. Lewis

Well, you can't deal in absolutes on these things. If someone says no one past 17 likes them, they are more referring to 90% don't, 10% do. 10% will seem like a lot if we're talking about 200 million people, if you just look at the 10% and ignore the 90. And it may not even be 90-10, it might be 95-5 or 99-1.

I consider shows like the Simpsons, Family Guy and Archer to not be standard cartoons. I don't think you'll find that many american adults over 20 who sit around and watch Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, Scooby Doo, Mighty Mouse, Underdog, Popeye. If the Japanese Culture looks at most Anime like we do most "other" cartoons, I think it's reasonable to believe that most don't keep watching it past a certain age.

When you find something else that you like more and no longer have time for video games or anime.

There's really only 2 correct answers here:
    1. When/if you grow bored of it
    2. When you die

If you can figure out how to keep watching anime or playing games after dying, then we might have a problem...

Fuck that, I'm going to make sure to haunt whomever has the best games and drive them crazy playing video games all night.

Obviously some people past 17 watch anime since most anime are supported by a tiny fraction of working people.

Some anime, kids oriented stuff like one piece or family oriented stuff like conan, do have some mainstream appeal and generate profit from tv ads (as well as merchandise). Others like gundam have lots of merchandising and generate a lot of the profit that way. Most anime though airs late at night which means no ad revenue worth speaking of and isn't heavily merchandised. All of those shows are nearly entirely supported by the sale of incredibly high priced discs (like $75 for 3 episodes). These are purchased by a tiny fraction of working adults.

I'm guessing you are just so ignorant because you've never actually been there. That other poster lives there. I spent a year there at a university, and even among university age Japanese, essentially nobody still watched it. They actually thought it was funny/strange that I still watched it that much... which was fine because I got to return the favor often when they would mention which US bands they liked and it was something like back street boys.

Well I'm a furry, furries (despite what people may tell you) represent a minority of people who never exactly grow out of enjoying media with anthropomorphic animals. Now you have weirdos, the perverts for example, who sexualize everything, but that's not the majority

Go with what makes you happy to get up in the morning.

I'll admit my knowledge of the inner-workings of anime in Japan proper are limited. I'll take your word for it.

I thought I'd grown out of gaming when I quit wow. Unfortunately wow was quickly replaced by a myriad of other games.
