    Ajin (7/10)

    - Pretty enjoyable show. I definitely it found engaging. I basically marathoned it straight through. It's a nice popcorn type show. It's hard to describe, but I liked the MC. A lot of times shows try to pull of this apathetic and emotionless MC and it always comes across poorly and edgey. I didn't really get that impression with Ajiin. Not to say he was an amazing character, but I enjoyed him. My only real gripe with the show is of course the lack of an ending. But for what it was, it wasn't bad. They at least picked a somewhat decent spot to end and I was overall satisfied with the show to an extent.

    Shouwa Genroku (7.5/10)

    - Really enjoyed this one. The first half of the show was a bit rocky, but the second half REALLY picked up. Had the first half been as good as the second, I think this would have been my AotS. Goriq mentioned that they focused too much on the Rakugo, and I'd have to agree. Once it kind of got over that a bit in the second half and really started developing the characters and their backstories, the show took off for me. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. And wow, what gorgeous art when it wanted to have it. The scene where Sukeroku and Yurie were sitting on the bench by the water during the festival in particular was gorgeous. How the lighting affected the scene, the cherry blossom trees in the background and the animation on the water. Just fantastic. That scene had easily the best art of the entire season by a significant margin.

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 8/10 - The surprise of the year for me. I know I said this many times, but I hated the books. Humour was unfunny, characters were cringe-worthy and uninteresting, couldn't force myself to read past Darkness' introduction. I expected a 2/10 anime I'd drop after episode or two. Instead, I got a freaking masterwork of comedy, the ultimate proof that delivery makes the joke. Exaggerated mannerisms and characters shifted from obnoxious to hilarious, Kyouma(Hai, Kyouma desu.) went from bland to perfect, even the setting changed the tone from STUPID stupid to funny stupid. Even gags that by all rights should be unfunny due to overuse if nothing else kept cracking me up. This series just might be the best adaptation I ever saw.

Phantom World 6.5/10 - KyoAni, I guess? Not really sure what to make of it. Beautiful animation, forgettable everything else. There was literally no story - aside from character exposition - for about 11½ episodes. Most of the season it was an episodic comedy show: stupid jokes, silly gags, not a bit of seriousness or even a phantom of a plot... and then suddenly the team woke up, realised the anime is about to finish, and decided they must squeeze some serious arc in? It makes no sense. That was a complete genre switch. Why.

Dimension W 6/10 - Too short for the story it tried to tell. Character development between the main pair was rushed, a few storylines cut short with a hastily assembled resolution, it felt as if the manuscript for 26 episodes was squished into 12. I wanted to like it more, I really did, but... On top of that some serious nonsense was going on a lot of the time. For example, why did the main antagonist use his allies, other sciencists, for the coil's final tuning? The device was supposed to have trouble teleporting living beings in general - not humans in particular. Hell, an earlier test was explicitly shown to use mice. Seameyer was supposed to be a genius sciencist in pursuit of advancement at all cost - insane, but definitely not a psychopath relishing in torture. His actions in the war's finale sure made him out as an easy to hate evil antagonist, but they were completely irrational and against his character. It's like a potentially interesting antagonist got thrown under a steamroller and flattened into a one-dimensional heap of boredom. That stuck out to me the most, but it was not the only time things didn't make much sense.

Koukaku no Pandora 5/10 - I am not exactly sure why did I watch this. A "story" about an underaged cyborg fingering an android in the form of an underaged girl on a regular basis to perform magical girl-like transformations and acquire superpowers. Their pet is a perverted bipe... tripedal liongoat, whose literal central leg reacts constantly to little girls and who's also a giant super-weapon. I am certain it made some sense to someone at some point - but it's apparently beyond my feeble mortal mind. Well, at least I definitely appreciated the nekomimi's perpetually blank and apathetic expression; and the final berserk trigger being leaking Beuer's porn to the entire world alone raised the score by one.

Utawarerumono - Itsuwari no Kamen 7/10 - Solid, but I wish it was faster paced. Even when some story is finally happening, actual events are intertwined with retarded bullshit. Good half of the series is spent on pointless antics, by the episode Haku's busy cleaning god damned gutters Hakuoro had already conquered an empire - and neither pacing is correct. It's almost as if the anime was being artificially stretched to have two 2-cour seasons instead of two/three 1-cours. Also, I can't get over how naively this show portrays war. The entire invasion force apparently is compromised of maybe two hundred soldiers. A fortress that holds this entire invasion off seems to be the size of a roadside fort that could maybe house a hundred soldiers if packed to the brim. Yamato's strategic genius deduces that sending a basically undefended supply caravan through the enemy territory is going to bail their forces out. Their definition of "cut off" seems to be "We can actually easily send as many soldiers and supplies as we wish since enemy's lack of naval presence makes transport by sea a cinch, our army is not encircled or confined, and one day's march is enough to reach their encampment - however we choose not to.". On top of that whoever thought that stupid fat bird makes a good replacement for the first series' Mukkuru must have been dropped on their head as a child. Oo
At least I always liked Utawarerumono's setting concept - a fantasy world that's actually postapocalyptic Earth, populated by results of bioengineering projects, where magic is simply forgotten technology - and the B'n'W twins raise the score by one on their own.

Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut 4/10 - Just nope. That's the score for the first 5 episodes since that's as far as I got. Maybe I'd watch it as a mid-season filler, but to set aside time in my schedule specifically for it? Bwahahahaha.
I guess the animation is OK, at least.

BBK/BRK 3/10 - Meh. That's the score for first 3 episodes. Not worth spending time on.

Divine Gate 4/10 - A point down for the low quality CGI characters from the very start. That aside, it's soooo eeeedgyyyyy I cut myself watching it. I'm being literal here btw, I was eating and cut my tongue on a bone splinter. Could actually be fun if the MC actually WAS a parent killer with some serious issues, but nope. Same old and boring edgy spiel - someone else killed them, he took the edgy blame out of edgy sense of edgy responsibility and is now edgy and patheti... I mean, depressed. Such a veritable mountain of chuuni bullshit. Names, themes, opening narration for every episode, just everything. TL;DR: nope. Can't handle it. That's the score for 5 episodes.

Hai to Gensou no Grimgar 9/10 - Great character designs, beautiful watercolour backgrounds, first class animation, fantastic OST. I even loved that insert song sequence from ep02, though the consensus seems to be that it was too long and unnecessary - in my opinion it fit in perfectly, laying groundwork for the series' overall tone and atmosphere. The audiovisual layer alone places this anime in top tier as far as I am concerned, before even getting to the "meat". The main reason I love Grimgar so much is probably because it's a deconstruction show, though realizing that took me longer than I'd care to admit. The world is real and alive, the characters are remarkably human, monsters have more character than some shounen protagonists. We follow not a walking chuuni wet dream, but a group of weak, scared kids trying to eke out a living in a hostile world. They work out interpersonal issues, improve their teamwork, slowly but surely move forward as both combatants and people.

GATE 8/10 - What's to say. Great show. It's one of rare times when I take in every piece of related media - manga, novel, and anime in this case. I enjoyed seeing modern military pitted against a realistic medieval fantasy world, not losing to deus ex machina magic but superior in the way I find believable. I loved Rory the Butcher, because the contrast between a delicate girl's appearance and a ruthless berserker's mentality and capability is something I enjoy greatly. I loved Tyuule, who's probably my favourite character in the entire series - a tragic humiliated queen who decided to take her revenge no matter what further she has to sacrifice. I could do with less Kuribayashi CQC ubersuccess, because unless some of those scenes were supposed to depict how pathetic Zorbal's friends are there's no way a single woman can beat multiple trained swordsmen with a rifle-mounted bayonet. Just shoot them to begin with, your advantage is the technology - not your muscles. I could do with less focus on Itami's antics and more focus on the broader view of the conflict. There's quite a few unfinished storylines - other countries' machinations, the "hole" created by Hardy under Arnus, invitation Itami received to Hardy's shrine in concert with his connection to Rory through some kind of contract, the conflict with the Empire is also hardly over with... I really hope the series did well enough to warrant a sequel. I still have the manga and the novel so it's not like I'll be left without answers, but I really want to see everything animated.

Luck&Logic 5/10 - Didn't drop this against what my logikku was telling me. Not sure if regretting. CGI characters even worse than in Divine Gate, but at least not as edgy. Edginess was completely replaced by so muchu corny engrishu, though. Was hard not to raughu at some pointsu. I feel someone just rolled the Engrish Wordu Roruretto and picked a bunch of randomu results to repeat over and over againu. At least the final fight was memorable. Not often do I witness a protagonist in drag battle the antagonist gay couple in BDSM gear with fate of the world at stake.

Mobile Suit Gundam - Iron-Blooded Orphans 9/10 - I wish we had more shows like this. The storyline itself is not particularly memorable, "just" a well executed standard Gundam, but the characters make it great.
Mikazuki clearly is a sociopath. He considers violence and killing from a purely practical point of view. It's not that his morals are distorted - they're simply not even a factor. He participates in social interactions by following taught patterns in order to fit in, but he doesn't seek them out naturally. He only shows emotion when it comes to very few characters - primarily Orga, Atra and later Kudelia to a smaller extent, rarely other Tekkadan members. I really loved a few of his scenes. The way he offhandedly finished Crank off after their duel, scratching behind his head. How he immediately charged Carta's unit, killing one before he even got into the machine and another before he started his up, as they were doing their theatrics. How he casually and completely dismissed(For real, not the "imma pretend I'm not hurt, bitches love badasses" kind of dismission) his right arm having become crippled because it does not interfere in operating his Gundam, he didn't even understand the others' concern. The way he sees everything is extremely dirty and pragmatic, perhaps best put in his own words - "You'll get in our way again if I don't kill you.". Orga is not as fun as Mikazuki, but he's interesting nonetheless. I can't help but wonder what is the exact relationship between them. They rely on each other heavily, Mikazuki has no direction on his own and Orga fuels his drive with Mika, but something more seems to be behind the scenes. The repeating flashback to the time they were even younger seems to show the event which tied them together - Mika kneeling spattered with blood, a body in fine clothing, money on the ground, Orga hurt and scared of something, and I suspect that "something" is Mikazuki and his actions just prior. There are times when he is clearly shocked and scared by Mikazuki's actions later on as well, during his charge at Carta for example, although it only takes a short moment to cover that shock up. I often felt as if he propelled Tekkadan forward for Mika's sake, by his promise to create a place for the two of them and the vague events behind it. Kudelia's growth and development were great - she learns much of the realities of life, of what she's fighting for and against, but despite that she keeps her idealism. She changes in a perceptible way, especially with Fumitan's death during the riots, but retains core of her character despite that.
Putting kids and teenagers in armed conflicts is rather common in anime - but very rarely is it done in this way. In IBO Tekkadan portrays child soldiers in a sadly realistic way, especially towards the end when they seem engrossed in Orga's words as if he was a cult leader. Replace his "for the family" with "for the <deity/country>" and you've got a kid brainwashing operation from a Middle Eastern conflict. I'm happy to have been born in a society where I don't have to worry about war directly impacting my life - but even today in many places around the globe there's "Tekkadan" kids fighting i.imgur.com/bsaqX2A.png , only they use AK47s instead of SF mecha, and usually die much much faster and more tragically.
If I had to nitpick IBO, there's one point that really annoyed me - the final battle and politics involved. Makanai has so much support his victory is pretty much guaranteed so long as he shows up at the parliment. The politicians hate when Gjallarhorn pokes their nose in their internal affairs, it's one of reasons why Makanai has that support. How the hell does a 3-day long battle utilizing multiple units of heavy military machinery on the city border go unnoticed by everyone? This is the Gjallarhorn military keeping one of Prime Minister candidates from entering the assembly by force. No amount of technicalities is going to work as excuses here. If there's a reason behind that, fine - but if left unexplained it's complete bullshit.

Had a RL friend of mine play Saya no Uta. Other than the absolute freaking out and having to stop because it was so disgusting, it was fun reading his comments. Only bad part was he liked the bad ends more. ;_; He thinks Saya is a monster. Saya doesn't deserve that shit. Saya is pure. Saya is good.
