I think the worst part about turning Superman dark and broody and "realistic" is the harsh tonal dissonance that occurs when, for example, the movie expects us to believe nobody realised that Clark Kent's great disguise is a pair of glasses and a tie.
Not even a fake beard.
If you're aiming for a sillier tone, like Marvel, you can handwave these kinds of things away because the entire movie is on the ridiculous side of the spectrum. But if you're making a grounded movie about the realistic consequences of an actual Superman, then you can't expect people to not question how it is that Clark Kent maintains his secret identity as well as a stable income even though he appears to frequently disappear from his workplace at times that inconvenience his boss.
I feel like the people in Hollywood as well as the fans of DC need to accept that the premise of Superman is inherently silly, and that you can tell serious stories with an emotional impact while still maintaining a sense of whimsical fun. Just look at the Winter Soldier, or pretty much every animated Disney movie from the 90s.
Finding the right tone for your movies is really, really important when you're trying to build a shared cinematic universe, and WB seem to still be struggling to figure out what kinds of movies they actually want to make.
Although I would argue that the Marvel TV shows like Daredevil also suffer a little bit from tonal dissonance as a consequence of playing up the dark and realistic angles. To be fair it's really hard to ride that line, and they're pretty close to hitting the mark. It gets nowhere near as bad as the Man of Murder-verse.
I personally just had some trouble getting into the ninja spy espionage mixed with occult magic when the rest of the show is so grounded.
Deadpool isn't MCU.
I agree with the succes of Cap America (clearly the best franchise of the MCU). Avengers 1 was a hit. 2 Was bad.
Civil war (I hope) will carry the MCU even further.
I like Marvel and they are a success. I don't understand this DC/marvel war.
I am a DC fan and I just hope both franchise deliver great movies. That's just a win for all of us. But DCU isn't having a great start sadly.
But again MCU didn't really take off before Avengers.
While having a "commercial" and "critical" success is preferred, if they've a choice between the two, productions will take the big moneyed success over the critics any day.
Superman will be back in play soon enough.
Marvel was only willing to risk going the dark route with Netflix. They've yet to show any dark/grittiness in the movies with their current line-up.
They hit all the notes with their first movie, Iron Man. That's what started the ball rolling (and got Jon Favreau on the radar for producers) But yeah, the Cap America franchise is clearly their best in my opinion. When Marvel keeps things "grounded" the writing is just incredible. ("Ant-Man" came out of nowhere, but it was down to earth and fun)
With Avengers, I felt there were cracks in the MCU that seemed obvious where power levels were brought down to a more human level. (This is more egregious with Guardians of the Galaxy where none of the leads resemble any of the comic book characters at all) And this to me is going to be an issue dealing with an immensely powerful being in the character of Thanos. Of course, maybe they'll turn him into a silly 2-dimensional caricature of a villain like they did with Ronan. Come to think of it, that's exactly what they'll probably do.
I think Warner Bros is set up for having their day. I'm skeptical of Suicide Squad, but optimistic for more grim-toned Wonder Woman story.

Syfy is moving forward with plans for a Krypton series that will follow Superman’s grandfather 200 years in the past
The DC Comics universe continues to expand on the small screen today as TVLine reports that the previously-rumored Krypton series is close to locking in a pilot episode at Syfy. Said to be set 200 years in the past, the Krypton series will explore the history of Superman’s ill-fated birth planet with Kal-El’s grandfather the show’s central protagonist.
“Years before the Superman legend we know, the House of El was shamed and ostracized,” reads the official synopsis of the Krypton series. “This series follows the Man of Steel’s grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Super Hero ever known.”
The idea for the Krypton series originated with The Dark Knight scribe David S. Goyer and Ian Goldberg (Once Upon a Time). Goldberg is set to draft the pilot with Goyer attached to executive produce In the late 1980s, John Byrne scripted a comic book miniseries called “The World of Krypton.” It introduced a version of Kal-El’s paternal grandfather named Seyg-El (named for Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel). There’s no word yet on whether or not the new series will keep that name, however.
It remains to be seen exactly how closely the Krypton series connects to already established live-action Superman continuity. While David Goyer has spoken about the series as a prequel to Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, we’re already getting glimpses of a small-screen planet Krypton on episodes of CBS‘ Supergirl. Because of the prequel angle, the Krypton series might not even need to make a distinction between the two anytime soon.
i want this

Actually Marvel is darker than DC regarding movie / television
Superman 1-5
Batman Forever
Batman & Robin
Green Lantern
Flash
I actually prefer Blade, Daredevil, Jessica Jones over Nolans shit
Well, if you're going to go there, don't forget to include the Nick Fury movie back in the 80s (Fury played by David Hasselhoff), or Cap movie back in the 70s played by Reb Brown...ad nauseum...(Although I noticed you omitted "Arrow"...probably because it doesn't fit your argument, especially that first season)
I believe most of us is looking at what is being considered relevant as in what's being part of the respective universes today from a movie point of view.
Marvel just isn't dark at all in that respect.
civil war is darker than anything in bvs combined.
AND it has iron man calling spider-man underoos

are you not aware that i said spider-man was going to be in that movie months before it was ever announced?
or ant man
or bp starting out on tonys side
or one of the main reasons theyre fighting is because of bucky with cap wanting to rehabilitate him and tony wanting to arrest him.
o wait, you didnt join until nov 2015, guess you missed all that shit
...moving along.

civil war is dark because you see two characters you love, viciously tear eachother apart. the scene where cap and tony are fighting is brutal, and the actors portray this beautifully.
its like two brothers killing eachother

you watch civil war, and by the end you just feel bad, on the inside.
like you just lost a relative for no reason, like your puppy just died, but in a good way.
10/10

i mean, can you even imagine what its like coming to terms with the fact youve been forced to kill god knows how many people and almost murdered your best friend?
