Until now this handy tool helped me to:
    - fix my car
    - fix countless electronics
    - open boxes / letters
    - do gardening
    - clip fingernails
    - fight off a dog
    - and helped me to fend off a mugger.

    so yes... extremely handy.
Sometimes I wonder what third world shithole you people live in, where you are dagger fighting muggers and dogs in the streets and you are forced to fix your car with a knife because you have no access to proper tools.

Work scenarios are work scenarios, but day to day life...a pocket knife...that's just ...meh.

I have a set of these in my kitchen...

I do not carry them around with me on a daily basis though, as I have never had the need for an emergency steak knife, nor do I envisage ever having that need.

My kitchen also has other knives in it, for cutting bread, chopping things, opening parcels and such like. Again the need for a knife outside of the home to cut bread, chop things, open parcels, etc. has rarely arisen throughout my life.

I'm confused as to those who are either afraid of themselves/someone carrying. I'm not sure if you're afraid because you believe us all to be carrying something like Mick's knife from Crocodile Dundee.

Because those of us who do carry daily, using the OP as an example, is a folding knife that is less than 4.5"/114mm when closed. Some are even smaller like my Benchmade Mini Griptilian at 3.87"/98.3mm closed. As far as viability is concerned, I personally carry in pocket, meaning the only thing visible is the small 2" clip on the outside of my pocket, and a small amount of the handle. Some knives don't even show anything more than the clip.

Not me, but that is the same style of knife I carry.

Situation with the dog happened, when someone in a well respected part of town let his dog run around without a leash. This dog attacked another leashed dog and bit the owner (an old woman), when she tried to separate those dogs. I don't know, what you would do in this case. But I stepped in...
And this was in Germany... not exactly a third world country.

And a Victorinox knife is kind of a pocket toolbox. That's the main reason I carry it around with me. And many small problems with cars can be fixed with the tools found in this knife.

If you carry a whole toolbox with you around all the time? Good for you. But I like it pocket-sized.

If you're fishing, out in the Woods camping, hunting etc then you're fine. Caught walking through the High Street with one on a Saturday afternoon? Not so much.
I'm pretty ok with that rule though, knife crime is a MASSIVE problem in Scotland, and I've seen some of the horrific shit a knife can do in the wrong hands.
Yeah, I have a small knife in my bike kit, is surprisingly useful, and I carry one when I have a legitimate need. I don't carry one on a "normal" basis, as its not only illegal, I can see no need to do so.

to be honest I dont live in a society where I feel the need to carry a weapon, my safety is assumed. I feel very sorry for people who feel so afraid they have a desire to walk around armed, its not a good society to live in.

that said I have a selection of knives and throwing knives for "fun", but I cant imagine ever actually using them. I know how to fight with a knife, and against a knife, from many years martial arts training in various forms, and my conclusion is that unless you really know what you are doing, drawing a knife in a fight is pretty much the most stupid thing you could do.

Yes. The dog owner tried to file a case against me (Because I was not exactly friendly with him due to his blatant irresponsibility). In Germany this falls under damage of property. But this never went through, because it was legally privilege of self-defense. (And the bitemarks on the woman were proof enough.)

But, I felt the need to help an old woman, who was being attacked by a rather large dog.

    Genuine question

For those of you who do carry a knife about, what are the reasons? What do you do regularly enough to feel carrying a knife is a necessity as part of your every day life?

I know what knives can be useful for, but what do you carry a knife for specifically.

    I'm curious!

Cause of it's main purpose... as a TOOL. It may elude many people, but these things are mainly meant to be used as tools.

I mean do you stumble upon many boxes to open while walking around town?

I carry a knife, to use when it is needed. Cut, scrape, strip, stab, pry, tighten/loosen.

You assume all of us are always in a town.

Now, that's a good example of a very narrow horizon.

I had to open a box once. I didn't have my knife with me, so I just used one of my keys. Crisis averted. I don't carry a knife on a daily basis because I don't want to get arrested, but primarily because I don't need a knife to feel like a hard bastard.

The truth is, most of these guys that carry knives 24/7 for defense purposes have absolutely no intention of using the knife as anything more than a deterrent. More likely is that they'd pull the knife on a mugger, the mugger would disarm them and then continue to stab the shit out of the guy before stealing his wallet.
Or - You pull the knife, mugger pulls a knife. you're still kinda fucked unless you're trained in weapons combat.

Everyone has to compensate for some shortcomings. Or maybe, the truth is much simpler and you don't have to interpret so much into it.
Try to use your time and energy more efficiently in the future. Or is this self-righteous posturing not tiresome?

I believe I've read every post in this thread, and I'm pretty sure not a single one who claims to carry has mentioned for self defense, or that they just outright want to stab somebody.

No, most of them claim they'll require it as some kind of tool. Because, you know, developed urban areas are the new survivalist's wasteland. It's an excuse. Most people who carry knives regularly do so because it makes them feel rugged or protected or some shit.
