MSI 980ti Golden Edition - why so cheap?

at 519 bucks, I don't understand why this 980ti is so cheap? is it just because it's a weird color (MSI is usually red/black, this being orange)? My friend says the color isn't desired so that's why it's cheap, but is this a good GPU?

We have 1080 which is more efficient than 980ti and with the release of cards with HBM2 memory, there won't be many or any reasons to buy these cards.
And that card is no longer worth $500

No. The components are better. This one has a fully copper heatsink, the 980ti basic versions have aluminum.

My best guess would be MSI trying to get rid of any PCBs they had left, it's a limited edition and it seems to have been fairly recently released. Just my guess tho.

The orange is fairly ugly. But it's the same cooler on the other 980ti cards.

To be fair, other 980 Ti's are about that price range as well.

This Zotac 980 Ti is $539. The same MSI 980 Ti is also on Amazon for the same price and has nearly 5 stars. It's safe to say the release of the new 1080's and 1070's are effecting the price of these cards. Why isn't everyone? Probably because they're holding out until supplies for the new GTX cards are in higher supply. MSI and Zotac are trying to clear inventory as fast as possible cause reasons. If you're in the market for a 980 Ti, I see no reason not to buy the MSI card. You know, besides the 1070 being $380. When they eventually reach that price.
