I have a theory. The coup committee took the control of the Joint Staff building, and released a proclamation to take over. The rest of the army couldn't verify if it was a genuine order, or not so they just waited. Once it was understood it isn't in the command chain, they released public statements to take down the coup.

So if it was an order from the Joint Staff, this coup would conclude successful.

You have to remember that the military ran Turkey for decades. They know how to run a country in a secular style. Erdogan's rise seems to coincide with the rise of more religious streams in Turkish politics. Another shot is certainly a possibility, that's usually how militaries get to be in power in the first place.

If Erdogan completely loses it and goes Stalin on Turkey's opposition, the military would probably revise its stance on "we're not with the coup".

I know, but from everything that Turks tell me, they actually trust the military to actually be a protector of democracy. Correct me if you know better, but this is the traditional view among Turks in Germany. That the military isn't evil but really on the "good side" of Turkish politics.
