Exceptionalism is to think one is above the rules, "outside the system". Its dangerous and self defeating way to go about business. It makes one narcissistic and blind to the truths of reality. Our economy isn't strong because of exceptionalism, its because we want to be the best at the game. Exceptionalism means we are somehow above it and impervious to economics.

Our military is strong due to hard work, in R&D and on the field, not because we are some how...exceptional.

Our schools are not exceptional until the college level, and even then our system is heavily flawed. Our colleges are good because of greed, greed attracts people, it doesn't do much for uplifting people since many leave school riddled in debt. The debt bubble will burst soon enough. Education is a major export of the US (meaning people come hear for education and then leave) but we're not capitalizing on it at home.

Its known that the US sits on extremely fertile land, which is why we shouldn't take it for granted. Exceptionalism tends to blind people from reality.

Exceptionalism to me means that we have aspects that are exceptional. You can make and eat an exceptional cake for example. We don't do anything that other people couldn't do if they applied themselves.

The funny thing is at a convention you are almost guaranteed to be cheered at the cheers seem pretty lack luster. Like even a lot of Republicans are like "so... we dont got anything besides emails and Benghazi after all this time.. fuck.. we might be in trouble"

Certainly America is exceptional in many ways, can't really become the richest, most powerful, and most influential nation in the history of the world without some special qualities. However, the idea of "American exceptionalism" goes way beyond that and almost implies that anything American is inherently better just by virtue of being American, and, not coincidentally, is an idea typically subscribed to by people who tend not to be all that exceptional themselves.
