He's far more likely to be of middle eastern origin, and this was almost certainly an act of Islamist extremism.

True, but most mentally ill people are not killing others, and it is to large extent a myth that means that makes it harder to the mentally ill to get treatment.
(I'm not saying that mentally ill are never violent, but that it is more complex and depends on the nature of the mental illness - and the situation.)

However, the priority right now should be to stop the terrorist attack - and to give medical assistance to the wounded.

Might be, it's interesting. Supposedly he claims to be Hartz IV i.e unemployed and to be born in Germany. Turk born in Germany might be a possibility, in which case it wouldn't be necessarily be islamic but could indeed be aimed at foreigners. People have to remember that minority groups in Western countries are negatively affected by the recent waves, as these people compete outright with them for jobs and other things. Being born in Germany he could've easily thought he had more of a right to these things.

Different outcome long term. If I snap tomorrow and go shoot up people it's pretty much extended suicide. I.e I'm going out to die, which is often one of the goals of someone going berserk but don't want to die alone. Terrorists have formulated ideological and political goals and strive towards change. They have an end goal, dying for it is just something they at times are willing to do. They're closer to paramilitary personel in that regard.

Police btw just said they have NOT heard from anyone that the culprit was screaming anti foreigner chants.
