A woman was shot to death during a “shoot or don’t shoot” training exercise Tuesday at the Punta Gorda Police Academy, according to police.

Punta Gorda police Chief Tom Lewis said the woman was “mistakenly struck with a live round” during a Citizens Academy scenario designed to simulate the use of lethal force. It’s not clear how the apparent fatal ammunition mix-up occurred.

The woman, identified as Mary Knowlton, was randomly selected to participate in the exercise as roughly 35 people watched.

She was shot multiple times during a role-play exercise in which the officer pretended to be the “bad guy,” with Knowlton playing the victim, a photographer covering the event told the Charlotte Sun.

Knowlton was rushed to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.

So, they use real guns? ... Sometimes I think this is the Twilight Zone.

They did, they reloaded with live rounds thinking they were blanks. She was shot multiple times, not just once from what's in the chamber.

The real question is, why don't they have guns adapted to use blanks. Even a normal pistol with blanks is dangerous at close ranges, it can do serious damage to eyes and such.

Yep. This means as they were loading the clips they had live and blanks on the same table... cause that makes all sorts of sense. Combined with probably yapping away and not paying attention to what they're grabbing.

Brandon Lee, and not quite. There was a bullet in the chamber when the blank went off launching the bullet in the chamber.

Not the chamber, the barrel. They were using improperly crafted dummy cartridges that had live primer left in some of them. That, in turn, caused the bullet in the dummy cartridge to wedge in the barrel at some point. Nobody noticed the bullet in the barrel before they switched to the bang bang blanks and we lost another Lee too soon.

If you know anything about weapons you know that blanks are CLEARLY different than live rounds.

The officer and all the other officers there need to be charged.

And frankly you don't even need to use blanks for this kind of training.

I've done plenty of this style training and the lesson can be taught without ammo.
