    Blizzard killing battle.net?

We’re going to be transitioning away from using the Battle.net name for our gaming service and the functionality connected to it. Battle.net technology will continue to serve as the central nervous system for Blizzard games—nothing is changing in that regard. We’ll just be referring to it as Blizzard tech instead. You've already seen this recently with things like "Blizzard Streaming" and "Blizzard Voice," and more changes are on the way.

When we created Battle.net, the idea of including a tailored online-gaming service together with your game was more of a novel concept, so we put a lot of focus on explaining what the service was and how it worked, including giving it a distinct name. Over time, though, we’ve seen that there’s been occasional confusion and inefficiencies related to having two separate identities under which everything falls—Blizzard and Battle.net. Given that built-in multiplayer support is a well-understood concept and more of a normal expectation these days, there isn’t as much of a need to maintain a separate identity for what is essentially our networking technology.

We just wanted to make sure everyone was aware as we moved forward with this change over the next several months; we’ll provide any relevant updates as the transition progresses.
I'm not sure what this means. Battle.net was the CORE product Blizzard produced. It was more important than the games themselves. It was a social hub for gamers to meet. First they gutted it in 2.0 and turned it into a glorified launcher. Now it sounds like they may be scrapping it completely. That's so sad to see. Battle.net should be revived and made even better, not thrown away. All of their games are so antisocial and this makes it feel like they are moving away from social gaming more than ever with this move.

Goodbye battle.net, you were the BEST thing Blizzard ever made...

TO FIX WOW:1. smaller server sizes & server-only LFG awarding satchels, so elite players help others. 2. "helper builds" with loom powers - talent trees so elite players cast buffs on low level players XP gain, HP/mana, regen, damage, etc. 3. "helper ilvl" scoring how much you help others. 4. observer games like in SC to watch/chat (like twitch but with MORE DETAILS & inside the wow UI) 5. guild leagues to compete with rival guilds for progression (with observer mode).6. jackpot world mobs.

So much overreacting over a name change.. Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow............
FOMO: "Fear Of Missing Out", also commonly known as people with a mental issue of managing time and activities, many expecting others to fit into their schedule so they don't miss out on things to come. If FOMO becomes a problem for you, do seek help, it can be a very unhealthy lifestyle..

It's a name change you dolt. They specifically even mentioned it was merely a name change. Battle.net in the grande scheme of things confuses people now when its all blizzard games. Battle.net was their old platform for Wc3, d2, etc. That name has served its purpose. Move along now.

It hasn't been around since 1996. They destroyed battle.net with 2.0

    2.0 is just a launcher.
1.0 was the true battle.net, which was a lobby for kids.

The problem is the lobby was the core tech behind the success of the company. So when they destroy that and then junk the battle.net name, basically saying we've just a launcher here and no vision beyond that, it doesn't speak well of the future of the company. 1.0 made Blizzard unique and special. Without it, its just another gaming company.

The #1 priority to fix Blizzard is to bring back Battle.net 1.0, not kill it off the last vestiges of it. Its utterly wrong for them to do it. An awful decision.

For the 10,000th time, what they currently call battle.net isn't even the true battle.net since they gutted it. They're not just "changing the name". They've already gone ahead and demolished battle.net. Now they are sunseting it. And it is the TOP property they have.

Its akin to calling the glorified web portal that is currently AOL.com the same thing as what AOL used to be in the 1990s.

AOL guts itself, shutters and destroys its entire community instead of fixing it, becomes a useless web portal living off the name, and then imagine some idiot exec coming along and dumps the AOL name. That's basically what's happened to battle.net. Battle.net was GENIUS. I will never understand how they ever thought it was a good idea to gut it and now sunset it. Sigh.

Battle.net has been around since 1996. It launched with Diablo and was expanded upon with Starcraft and Warcraft 3. Also if you bothered to read the blue post all they are doing is changing the name. Literally uses the same technology current battle.net does to connect to online multiplayer and the app. Also do explain how 1.0 was "special" it was literally a lobby where people joined for multiplayer in Starcraft, Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3.

Gutted? What exactly did they gut from it? Please do tell.

What in the world are you even ranting about? They're just renaming the service to be consistent with the current naming scheme they have. It's simply to communicate things to the customer more clearly.

You're just another one of those people who just instantly go off whining without even thinking for a second.

Battle.net has NOT been around since 1996. The original 1.0 was gutted and they rolled out 2.0 which is just a launcher. 1.0 is effectively defunct. Don't confuse 2.0 with 1.0. The two have absolutely NOTHING in common. People on 1.0 cannot communicate with those on 2.0.

Yes it has go do some reading. Diablo 1 launched with a basic version of battle.net. Starcraft 1 and games before WoW expanded upon it. Also literally the same system is in Warcraft 3, Starcraft and Diablo as it always has been since day 1.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle.net

"LAUNCHED IN 1996." November 30th literally 1 month before the release of Diablo so it was ready for that game specifically.

No it is not. The system they currently call battle.net 2.0 was launched in 2009. Go do some reading:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle.net

That system is totally unrelated to the original battle.net 1.0

Blizzard officially unveiled the revamped Battle.net 2.0 on March 20, 2009.[2] It later revealed further details of the Battle.net revamped features at Blizzcon 2009 which supported StarCraft II, Diablo III and World of Warcraft. The original Battle.net was then renamed to Battle.net Classic.[3]
They opted to name the abandoned relic as battle.net classic. But they were completely two different systems that are unrelated.
