Jeff Sessions met with Russian Ambassador twice in 2016

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/world...=.52ede8f0c181

So yeah, the Washington Post is reporting that Jeff Sessions met with the Russian Ambassador to the US twice last year while he was an active part of the Trump campaign. What's more, he has evidently committed perjury, given he said under oath during his confirmation hearings in January that he had not met/spoken with the Russian government.

Sessions spokesperson is claiming that it was in his capacity as a senator and a member of the Armed Services Committee, but supposedly no other member of the committee met with the Russian ambassador.

Will be delicious if this leads to Sessions being forced to resign, just like Flynn.

At the very least, it's a strong piece of evidence supporting calls for an indepedent prosecutor to investigate Trumps and his campaigns ties to Russia.

So can we just change MAGA to MARA yet?

This will be the actual test for Republicans imo. Before they could get away with this wishy washy bullshit about "no real proof" about a connection between Trump's administration and Russia.

But now a fucking senator blatantly lied under oath about his conversations with the Russian Ambassador. If other Republicans don't start coming out and, at LEAST, condemning this, if not calling for his resignation, then Democrats should hang that shit on all of their necks in 2018 and beyond.

Can we all just, again, appreciate how fucking insane it is that the party that spawned McCarthy is silent on all this obvious Russian intervention in our election, and worse yet, possible collusion in it? Its absolute craziness.

Yeah, seems like a pretty clear cut case of perjury here, no matter how Sessions tries to spin it. And at the very least, it's another strong argument for why Sessions should recuse himself from the investigations into Trumps Russian ties.

I also just want to point how how much I despise McCain and Lindsey Graham but goddamn at least those are two Republicans calling out this bullshit.

We can disagree, fundamentally, about virtually everything but I would still call them Americans. They are still trying to protect us from Russian interference, and they're seemingly alone on this. The rest of the party? Fuck 'em all, they put party over the goddamn country because their stooge got in.

It all makes sense if you think about it though. McCarthy and his cronies weren't anti-communist because they were such fervent free market advocates, because what the hell did McCarthy actually know about economics? They were only obsessed with the USSR because just like any other xenophobe, they were scared to death of the possibility of infiltration and takeover by evil foreigners, this of course being a time when Russians were the most alien culture that middle America could envision. Nowadays there are so many cultures and ethnic groups in the public eye that we never bothered thinking about much before, that Russians seem almost like kin because they are still white after all.

True, there are polls that fucking Putin's popularity has gone up with Republican voters.

This is so ridiculously insane. The left may have SJWs peppered throughout their ranks but holy fuck we have half the country ok with Russian influence in our election to such an extent that they don't even believe its a real story because their glorious leader is telling them its fake.

It wasn't the Russians, it was people inside the Govt that leaked the information. Problem is people like you that believe everything the media tells them. That's the real problem in this country.

People seem to forget Russia's history as well. After the communist regime, a temporary western democracy capitalist government was instituted for a time under Boris Yeltsin in the 1990's. Most here are too young to even remember this government, many were growing up during that time and not politically cognizent yet. After that failed as well, Putin took over with populist rhetoric and instituted a far right nationalist government, and has remained president ever since with BLATANT rigging of elections.

In another thread, we have a discussion about how absolutely terrifying it is that the Trump administration is sucking power away from government agencies and centralizing it in the executive branch. While Republican constituents whined that Obama was overreaching with executive orders, none of them actually created laws, they all enforced existing laws, which is what executive orders are allowed to do.

Trump has blatantly created laws out of his executive orders, which is not a power granted to them. We say... "Just remember, anything Trump does, any future president can now do by precedent." But what if Trump doesn't plan on only having two terms? What if he centralizes power so much that the 22nd is tossed out?

Dictatorships rise in many ways, and the best way to rise from a democracy/republic is to convince your base that the nation is in danger, and that you're the only one who can fix it, and that you need the power to do it. The US government was designed to separate powers, legislation passed in the legislative branch, the judicial determines guilt or innocence of people, and constitutionality of laws, and the executive branch creates the means by which laws are enforced. No one branch should ever have the power of the others.

Hopefully we will not see Trump make a move to consolidate even more power under the executive branch. Hopefully. But if we do, even Republicans should begin worrying. But I imagine that even at that point, when/if it becomes blatantly obvious what he would be trying to do, I imagine there would still be Trump cultists that would back up what he's doing as the right thing to do to battle radical islamic terrorism, or some such nonsense, and give him the power to do it by granting him legislative and judicial powers. If that ever happens, you should be fucking terrified.

Another member of Trump's administration had contact with the russians during the campaign?

    Yeah, that's the frustrating thing.

Hell, four years ago the GOP was bashing Obama for trying to reset relations with Russia and called him naive for not recognizing the threat they posed to us. Now the GOP is hollering 'Russia is great!'.

Unsurprisingly, though, Nancy Pelosi and other ranking Democrats are calling for Sessions to resign for committing perjury. Wonder if the GOP will circle the wagons and mindlessly defend him or recognize the crime he committed.

Will be delicious if this leads to Sessions being forced to resign, just like Flynn.
Flynn resigned because he lied to the Vice President and then by numerous accounts within the administration did a poor job at handling the job of National Security Adviser.

However let's be clear: This is what Sessions said under oath:

Lying under oath is a serious matter. You may think what they say in those confirmation hearings doesn't matter, oh but it does. I'll call a spade a spade.

Now Sessions will claim that he met with Russian ambassador in the capacity as a member of the Committee on the Armed Services, but it doesn't justify it.

The other night, on Mediaite, there was an article about a CNN instant poll finding 70% of people feeling very positive after Trumps speech yesterday and conservatives there were singing praises of it. The same network they have been calling fake for daring to report news that is unfavorable for Der Fuhrer for months.

Yeah the problem isn't the obvious corruption, its the way we found out.

    Sure.

This is not a conspiracy theory. The Justice Department, you know the one Sessions leads. Confirmed he did this.
