    #YouTubeIsOverParty Google attacking LGBT community

    https://www.theguardian.com/technolo...deos-invisible

Youtube is cracking down on LGBT content creators by censoring their content behind 'restricted content' settings, which effectively block access to this content on many devices. I know that many people on this site are incredibly pro-censorship, but this has gone too far.

We must stand with the LGBT community against these internet censorship fascists.

Given the absurdity of the way they are enforcing this strict policy on gaming commentators, it seems like the LGBT community is just getting swept up in the mess. I sort of doubt Google has a legitimate beef with the LGBT community. They likely just don't want sex and stuff talked about on their platform. The policy is far reaching, and over bearing, however.

I fear that through the current attempts at social engineering and covert censorship, we are engineering the weapons of our own destruction.

Oh wow. That's....well that's a huge shift in tone of the thread. By all means, please tell me more about this.

Depends on the criteria for age restriction. For example, the article references one of Tyler Oakley's videos on 8 black LGBTQ+ Trailblazers. This video contains the phrase "I feel like living a long and unapologetic life is the ultimate fuck you to any bigot". It is possible that the video was age restricted not due to the subject matter, but due to the language used. I'm not bothered in any way by this language, but it could be the reason for the age restriction. I know I would expect TV programmes containing the word fuck to be aired post watershed. Discussions on sex and sexuality on youtube are likely to be more lax about the language that they use, in terms of words and phrases that would earn a dvd release an age restriction.

You want my advice? Stop saying fuck.

    just youtube being youtube.

quite common corporation policy is to just broad strokes automate stuff with lots of collateral damage rather then create a proper system but requires money/work. doesn't mean they are anti lgbt but probably means someone sued or made a fuss about sexuality on youtube in general.

it's just like that pewdiepie thing, just ban and disassociate themselves from it rather then risk bad PR, regardless of the actual facts.

I don't see the problem here. These kind of filters are common place. A parent may not want their child to see LGBT content ... I am not saying that is right to do so, doesn't change the fact it is a parental right.

The first big problem I thought of in terms of censoring this type of content would be the case for younger people who are in a situation where they feel forced into a closeted situation and rely on public access devices for such information. From what I understand, computer access at places like schools and libraries is limited to restricted mode.

It has seemed like they are indeed targeting whole bunch of stuff, hitting many groups in the process.

They just want the platform to be family friendly. Talking about sex, be it hetero or not, isn't family friendly. Now, to anyone who is a fan of YouTube, they are clearly going about it in a way that is akin to a bull in a china shop. But, that is their right, I suppose.

That's fine, but you can make a video about inspiring black LGBTQ+ figures without saying fuck in your video. If the age restriction trawls through the contents of the video, given that it has subtitles to look at, then it might be flagging videos for language. In terms of a school setting especially I think there are plenty of parents who wouldn't be particularly happy if teachers were swearing in front of their children. Some parents are okay with their kids watching videos with swearing in, some aren't. It makes sense for those videos to be restricted, as they would be in other media, so parents can decide. If people want to make videos that don't contain any swearing, that are made specifically with children in mind, then we can see if those get blocked. As it stands, I would not be at all surprised if most of the videos restricted were done so on the basis of scanning the subtitles for profanity.

As a side note - I went to watch Tyler's video expecting that he would swear in it. I subscribe to him and know that there was a pretty high probability of that being the case.

Don't quote me on this but I'm quite certain Google is one of the most pro-LGBT companies out there currently. Or at the very least aren't trying to actively sabotage us.

So I'm confused. What are we talking about restricted content filters?

I went to this guys page https://www.youtube.com/tyleroakley

Who said his video "8 Black LGBTQ+ Trailblazers Who Inspire Me | Tyler Oakley" is blocked.

Yet when I goto his page it's right there.

I am on youtubes side. I have no problems with people being lesbian, gay, bisexual or twisted. I just don't understand why they have to celebrate it so much, shove it down our throats and play the victim card so much.

When I watch youtube with my parents they are confused when they see homosex people and asking question like "honey we don't mind what those people do in their free time, but why do all of them act like total turds?"

Still glad to see youtube taking action. If this trend were to continue the LGBT propaganda would spread even worse than right winged propaganda and our children would believe that being gay is something normal and cool, because they don't understand yet that those people are unfortunate souls who can't help themselves. A true gay person doesn't choose to be gay. It is the way they are.
Since youtube has become such an important part in all our lifes and even for children in their upbringing who can't differentiate yet, I have to applaud youtube for doing that. Great move.

Not blocked, age restricted. If you're logged in and you're old enough then you won't see the age restriction.

Not saying you are lying, but I don't see any mention of age restriction.

    Sounds fine. Why the outrage?

Are they bringing up topics like sexuality in their videos? If so, I don't see the problem with what they're doing. Sexuality is an age restricted topic of discussion in any other form of media, regardless of what way you swing.
    Oh aye.

The system is very likely a profoundly stupid system as is common youtube practice. For me to believe this is deliberate would require me to believe the system isn't incredibly broken, which I doubt.
