"Are you happy" is kind of a tough thing to actually measure though. But being rich, alive, supported, free etc tend to make people happy in general.

Which is why it's using 2016 data. Just like the 2016 report used data from 2015. 2017 data will be used in the 2018 report.

When we owned the world and stuff, we were prolly pretty happy. Just goes to show, this is what happens when you let the colonies get uppity.

The UK and US would obviously be ranks 1 and 2 on a true measurement of happiness as they have both overthrown the shackles of establishments and elites that were holding them down. /s

What a truly pointless excercise trying to measure happiness by wealth/freedom is. If Norway is so awesome why aren't they ranked towards the bottom in terms of suicide?

They wouldn't have gotten nearly as much exposure without that headline.

I actually agree. The "happiness" variables aren't meaningful.

Generally people commit suicide because of mental health problems, not unhappiness in the strictest sense of the word. Having less than perfect mental health care will make you unhappier in general, but you could be best at everything other than mental health care, and still have a bunch of people offing themselves

Freedom to commit suicide.. you can choose more freely to keep your life or take it.

Obviously Syria is the happiest country on the planet being that it has the lowest suicide rates!

And Norway has a below average suicide rate. World average is 9.7, Norway is 9.1.
