You're making the huge and incorrect assumption that all crimes are something that one can be rehabilitated from. In some cases, people's brains are just too messed up to be a functioning part of society. That's not a failure of the state, it's a "failure" of the human genome. Is pedophilia one of these crimes? I believe admitting guilt is seen as the action of someone who admits they did something wrong and wishes to make amends and correct the action. A smart man will always admit guilt if they're in a situation where they're irrevocably caught, gets you a lighter sentence.

But it seems like the risk of failed rehabilitation and throwing this guy back into society only to have him rape another kid is too high. Being eligible doesn't mean he will get it automatically. And with a 4 yo rape case the chance are quite small he will be out after 10 years.

But if the option means avoiding the whole trial for the victim it's ok. You have to give something if you want a guilty plea and in this case the DA offered the right one.

I don't think so. If science doesn't know how to rehabilitate someone, it doesn't mean it won't discover a way to rehabilitate someone a few years later - nor does it mean that the person cannot be rehabilitated naturally, over time. Life sentence essentially proclaims: "You cannot be ever rehabilitated", which is obviously wrong.

Norway has a good system in this regard. They gave Breivik 21 year, but it is a flexible duration, it depends on how his rehabilitation goes; it can be shortened or prolonged, depending on the circumstances.

Brevik will die in jail there's little doubt in that.
