You're making the huge and incorrect assumption that all crimes are something that one can be rehabilitated from. In some cases, people's brains are just too messed up to be a functioning part of society. That's not a failure of the state, it's a "failure" of the human genome. Is pedophilia one of these crimes? According to Dr. Ho writing in the British Medical Journal, and many others, it's not something people actually get over. I'm just saying it's far more complicated than "a failure of the system."

Dude... he raped a 4 year old kid. The first priority in cases like this should be to protect society from such a monster not rehabilitation. The priority of the justice system is not rehabilitation. The priority is and always should be protecting society from dangerous people. The victim is the child and anyone else effected by this, not the rapist.

But rehabilitation is required, when possible, to reintegrate criminals into society so they can become productive citizens.

With that said, a dude who rapes a four year old should never see the sky again as a free man.

Exactly my thoughts. Why is parole an option? Why is an admission of guilt somehow a reason to let him have an option to get out early? Let him rot.

I believe admitting guilt is seen as the action of someone who admits they did something wrong and wishes to make amends and correct the action. A smart man will always admit guilt if they're in a situation where they're irrevocably caught, gets you a lighter sentence.

I mean if you can actually rehabilitate people I'm all for it.

But it seems like the risk of failed rehabilitation and throwing this guy back into society only to have him rape another kid is too high. I mean how the fuck do you prove someone like this is actually rehabilitated to the point where they will never do anything like this again? Especially considering he'll probably say or do anything just to get out of jail.

Given the current state of rehabilitation capabilities and the severity of this crime, I'd say keeping him in jail for the rest of his life is the best option.

Most of the people who are in court are legally instructed to admit guilt, even if they don't actually feel any remorse and are only sad they were caught. We should do lie detector tests on them all, and ask "Are you sad you were caught? Are you sad you did what you did?" Lol...

I'd rather die as a guy who raped a 4 year old than go to prison for 10 years.

    That's so disgusting.

Being eligible doesn't mean he will get it automatically. And with a 4 yo rape case the chance are quite small he will be out after 10 years.

But if the option means avoiding the whole trial for the victim it's ok. You have to give something if you want a guilty plea and in this case the DA offered the right one.

Life sentence essentially proclaims: "You cannot be ever rehabilitated", which is obviously wrong.

Norway has a good system in this regard. They gave Breivik 21 year, but it is a flexible duration, it depends on how his rehabilitation goes; it can be shortened or prolonged, depending on the circumstances.
Brevik will die in jail there's little doubt in that.

In small towns it's not uncommon to vote for a party regardless of the political affiliation of the people running. In SC you could be the most pro-choice, pro-lgbt, pro-union, etc but as long as you run a Republican on the ticket you'll win by a landslide against a pro-life, anti-LGBT, anti-Union democrat
