Thumbs up Will WoW Ever See 13 Million Subs Again?

Simple question, will WoW ever see 13 million subs again like it had in WoTLK?

Is there anything that Blizzard could do to get 13 million subs again?

This is not a matter under Blizzard's control. The entire context of computer gaming has changed: a different mix of people plays, on different kinds of devices, in different life circumstances. No MMO of WoW's sort is ever going to have that many subs again, because people will be playing other stuff.

If anything free to play games has proven it's better to cater to the "whales" (big spenders). They sort of started going this route with people paying for mounts/pets with real money, but the character services page also deserves an honorable mention for milking the most devout of World of Warcraft players.

I could see 13 million subs for a game like WoW 2. It would be a fresh new start with no one knowing the landscape and world and environments

All new places to discover on the scale that was vanilla WoW

This, Warcraft will never have a shot in hell of seeing 13 mill subs again unless we get a new release... Expansions won't cut it, and this game desperately needs a refresh.

Give us Warcraft 4, and then WoW2... The Starcraft 2 Trilogy is done being developed, now is the perfect time to set the RTS team on the next Warcraft game.

A gun is like a parachute. If you need one, and don’t have one, you’ll probably never need one again.

Only way Blizzard will see 13mil subs possibly once again is by creating a new innovative game and even those chances are slim to none. WoW in it's prime/peak stages aka Classic/Vanilla up to Wrath had people no lifing it up (myself included), the game and expansions were new with most people not knowing how to play an mmo thus it was challenging with great content. The rants could go with a big wall of text but, I'll refrain.

The time of WoW getting tv ads with celebrities and being on bottles of mountain dew and getting board games, tabletop figure games and general merchandising out the ass has passed. Social interaction online and multiplayer online gaming are not the novelties they were in 2004. The saturation points passed and so has the mainstream media attention. Games not dead its just in the period every mmo hits once it has no new market to tap, you dont hear anyone gush about everquest anymore but folks still play it. Folks just come back the longer a game goes on and the more a lapsed player misses or has to catch up on.

A lot of the old community that thrived on this game, changed. People grew older, matured, and started families, received a new job, or had some change in life that drew them away from the game. We've accumulated a lot of the toxicity that exists in the world, and slowly, but surely, the original (veteran) players are beginning to "hide" or quit.

This game will never see 13 million subscribers again, much like how America isn't the greatest country in the world anymore.

I don't think so Jay. Bit too optimistic mate for an MMO as old as WoW. As posted above people have moved on, started families or just stopped playing.

Yes. If they brought back the vanilla style in-game community it would probably go way past 20 million subs.
TO FIX WOW:1. smaller server sizes & server-only LFG awarding satchels, so elite players help others. 2. "helper builds" with loom powers - talent trees so elite players cast buffs on low level players XP gain, HP/mana, regen, damage, etc. 3. "helper ilvl" scoring how much you help others. 4. observer games like in SC to watch/chat (like twitch but with MORE DETAILS & inside the wow UI) 5. guild leagues to compete with rival guilds for progression (with observer mode).6. jackpot world mobs.

Impossible. The circumstances behind reaching that number will never occur again. That is WOTLK being launched in China after being offline due to the provider closing shop and Cataclysm being released in US/Europe as China was still working through it. Had China had its release on a normal schedule we probably would've hit no more than 10 million.

Why do you feel the need to nation bash unprovoked in a wow subscriber thread?

  17. #17
No, but even maintaining a third of that would be considered very successful.

Did WoW ever have 13 Million subs? Might as well round-up the misinformation and say they had 15 million.

Q3 and Q4 of 2012 they had 12 million or a little over... Anyways...

I doubt they will get back over 3 million nowadays, steady subs ... a new x-pac, it could spike .. but not 12M though.

Only reason it ever got that high was because of the China launch.

You'd gain casuals, but lose a lot of serious players. Would not equal out.

Maybe a World of Diablo or something that has a bit more mainstream appeal.
