The irony in your statement amuses me. I'm going to assume your a conservative voter based on my general perception (I might be wrong) but you can't moan about our NHS then vote for a government who would love nothing more than to downscale it and move it into the private sphere.
It's unfair really to compare their system to the European system. We can employ economies of scale on the purchase of drugs etc so we get more fundamentally for what we spend. Their medical research is still top notch and if they ever move to a single payer system they would quickly become one of the best in the world but they have too many rednecks who would rather die than vote for something "socialist".
Switzerland, Australia, and the UK are all pretty center countries. They're not left wing and sure as fuck aren't socialist.
Anyone bother to go look at their criteria and methods? While extreme differences between high and low ratings are basically just because correlates of GDP, the finer-grained analysis at the top could just as easily be listed as "number of leftish policies implemented" as "Social Progress".
That said, Iceland's a nice place - OK, what am I supposed to do with that information? I'm not at all surprised by it and I don't dispute, but I hardly think it provides a model for other nations.
My final thought on the list of top countries is that this is basically just a proxy for how homogeneously Northern European a place is. I bet heavily ethnically Scandinavian portions of Minnesota score well too.
Social progress index has nothing what so ever to do with socialism. Social and socialism aren't related.
Denmark is right-leaning.
Norway is ruled by conservatives on the right.
Iceland is ruled by a coalition between 2 rightwing parties and a center one.
Finland is ruled by a coalition of of mostly center-right parties and one center-left party.
Socialism you say...?
The parts of the United States that are as segregated as Iceland are generally pretty nice. They're highly egalitarian in terms of both incomes and attitudes, have very low crime rates, very low unemployment rates, and very high education rates.
The irony of touting how nice Northern Europe is while also bitching that the United States doesn't have enough Mexicans mixed in with our villainous whites cannot be overstated.
You're not to think you are anything special. You're not to think you are as good as we are. You're not to think you are smarter than we are. You're not to convince yourself that you are better than we are. You're not to think you know more than we do. You're not to think you are more important than we are. You're not to think you are good at anything. You're not to laugh at us. You're not to think anyone cares about you. You're not to think you can teach us anything.
US doesn't lead in anything , besides obesity.

It makes one wonder if it wasn't for the inventiness of America that all those other countries would be so high.
Most of thing they have today and they take for granted each and every day are because of American inventions.
Yeah, that's what it boils down to at the citizen level, at the governmental/industry level it's all profit chasing of course. But by all means, let us cut our defense spending in half or more, dissolve NATO and pull back our missile shields and we'll see how long Europe and elsewhere can maintain their generous social programs with their ragtag Boy Scout military.
