Its not about security, its about big credit card companies being able to pass fraud costs on to merchants. Pre-chip technology banks and credit card issuers had to eat fraud charges, if your store doesnt upgrade to the new chip technology YOU eat the fraud charge. Now 90% of fraud occurs online, so the chips security is really a joke and the cost saving is kind of a joke too.

Yeah normally I totally disagree with you but knowing security yeah. You are spot on unfortunately security has become a meaningless word. It doesn't mean what people think it means.

I even laughed extra hard at a company that openly admitted others abuse the term, but leave out so did they.

personally I'd rather use a debit card than a credit card anyway, but the chip's fine. opted out of contactless though, I'd rather not have any random person be able to use my funds if I lose my card or if it's stolen. we have PINs for a reason

I actually used to but some vendors and banks became fucking snobs about it. Some won't take debit with out an extra fee or not at all.

At first I didnt like the chip. Never knew when to chip or swipe.

Now I get annoyed when places dont support the chip. They think scotch tape over the hole makes it all better.

Lol another guard warned me about that another activated his thinking he could swipe anyway. At this point I'm worried Men in Suits might show up asking when I'll activate my new one.

Don't know what there is to argue about. Another retail worker here from the States. The following scenarios are possible:

If you have a chip, you're forced to use it. If your card doesn't have a chip, obviously you have to swipe. If your card has a chip, but the chip is damaged or unreadable, you have to "fail" the card three times in succession, and then it will allow you to swipe it.

Here in Canada, we've had chips for years. We're moving on to tap-and-go technology; I can just tap my card on most card readers, and for purchases under $100, that's all it needs.

Almost every card here in Brazil uses chip technology, as it's been like that for many years.

I never had a swipe only card, so I never actually had to transition to chip.

Speed has nothing to do with the chip. I use a chip reader and its virtually instantaneous. I do understand this isn't the norm but its not the chip that causes this. Mine is hooked up to the internet and I only use a basic cable internet plan.

There's no way he must just be slow here in Canada we have had them for like 10 years there are more chip cards then non chip cards there is no way the US is just doing this now

Yeah, it's US. Half the places i go to haven't even switched their machines to chip readers

Yeah, I don't really care. Was that unclear? I'm not liable for fraud so, I don't really support any changes that cause my daily life chores to take longer. The cards take a long time to read, and they slow the line down.

Yeah, it just seems like it creates that awkward moment where you are all done, and the clerk is done, and line is sort of ready to proceed, but the machine isn't quite ready yet.

I really don't want to activate this new Credit Card from my bank and this stupid chip, sorry but I find it annoying, I actually enjoy the swipe and go.

Everyone I seen getting used to it, has to stick it in and punch a number and wait for some sound to give them the clear to remove it. I never had to, because I normally just swipe and go.

They are common in the UK.

Both my debit and my credit card are RFID cards.
