Never watched it, wouldn't know. Heard its amazing from everyone, I just have a hard time sitting down and watching hour+ long episodes of a show with however many seasons at this point.

Nope. Never seemed appealing to me. I never get into a show during it's series run, though, so my opinion is completely secondhand.
The reports of my death were surprisingly well-sourced and accurate.

Yeah the show has done a decent job at staying away from a political/social commentary. I usually have a good gauge for that stuff and I think it's been rather neutral. The main gripe has been the mass surge of female characters and the decline of men in power. But there's plenty of women who met gruesome ends or were victimized as well.

For those who have the time to watch TV but aren't interested or willfully resisting, my advice would be DEFINITELY try watching. I was exactly the same way. I basically resisted anything that was being constantly talked about. I didn't watch TWD or Game of Thrones until a few years after they were out, but was so glad I did.

If the sex/violence puts you off in the first couple episodes, just keep watching a little longer. It's definitely not just another Spartacus, there's some great storylines and very compelling characters. S3E9 is the most heartwrenching, shocking, glorious bit of TV or film I've ever seen.

I've tried to get into the show multiple times. Love the setting a some of the characters but.... I just can't get over how much of a cunt Joffrey is. I've made it to season 2 and just seeing his face makes me stop watching the show, I've tried to push through at least 3 times now but something about him and his mother for some reason just turns me off of the show. I guess it should be a compliment for how well they portray their characters but I wish they didn't bother me so much to the point of not wanting to watch.

if your talking about the walking dead putting female in power is pretty on course with the comics id say the only difference is the guy at what ever that little town they will in was a woman leading instead. my problem with the walking dead is its written horribly and every one in it acts like a moron not to mention the unnecessary chances from the book like sothie dying or how they butchered the Governor with him just shooting his people leaving then coming back. there are so many questionable choices and bad writing that make me dislike the show yet i still watch it when i have nothing better to watch.

as to sex/violence i have no problem with violence but i dislike sex and nudity when its there for no good reason. if i wanted to see that stuff id just watch porn i don't buy that it makes the world feel more alive as there are tons of shows without it that feel alive. if its in for a good reason though i have no problem with it.

Boy oh boy, did you miss out on then.

OT: Yes, I really love the show, I may consider reading the books, eventually.

I sincerely enjoy the show, though I feel that some of the world building from the books has been lost. To the television series' credit, there are some side stories which have been truncated or altogether removed, and some of these changes/omissions are welcome and make for better viewing.

I love high fantasy. Whether it's Tolkien, Robert Jordan, Terry Goodkind, Rothfuss, Elder Scrolls, etc. I do tend to like my fantasy to be a bit more magical and inclusive of varied sentient races, but I find George RR Martin's creation to be compelling all the same.

I loved the first and second seasons, liked the third, was tepid on the fourth, and lost interest sometime between the fifth and sixth.

The show was at its best when closely following - and judiciously adapting - the source material. The Dornish and Ironborn train wrecks, the bungling of Jaime's character development, the showrunners' admitted bias against certain characters (poor Stannis), etc. were all cases of D&D going off on their own and coming up with rubbish. The Dorne plot in particular was so bad on so many levels that it blows my mind, as I didn't even really care for the books' Dorne storyline. The bar wasn't that high. Lows like that are a shame, since the show's success has left it with the high production values that the first couple seasons never had but deserved far more than the later ones. This might read like the rantings of a bitter ASoIaF fan, and maybe they are, but hey, I think a lot of people feel the same.

There's no denying the show struck gold though. It galvanised a huge group of nerds by adapting a much-loved book series, profited from unprecedented viral marketing, nailed a lot of the casting, and hooked the average consumer with tits, gore, zombies, and the like. Credit where credit's due, D&D will die rich. I see a fruitful retirement to license shitty spin-offs and talk about politics on Twitter in their future.

Nah I mean the female characters in GoT. For me, TWD's biggest weakness has been filler but I still think it's a good show that makes very tense moments. The only thing I've noticed about TWD is how much they force interracial relationships. I really dont' care about such things until it becomes apparent they're pushing a message.

I think the same way towards sex/violence in TV shows, but then you also have to take context into account. What you see on the show isn't even close to the historical levels of sex and violence in the age that the show is inspired from (medieval times). But that doesn't stop people from writing it off for being "too much".
Makes it fun to watch with the girlfriend though

It's not because not every character in the show "is a wizzard harry" that this would not be fantasy...

While I agree with your assertion that GoT is clearly fantasy and lands squarely in that bracket, your definition doesn't help much. Are zombie movies fantasy? I wouldn't define them as such.

I think GoT blurs the line a little. While it is clearly fantasy, GRRM himself has stated that much of it is based on European history, so it takes on a lot of drama stereotypes. That's what makes the show great for me though, nobody is just 'super tough wizard guy', the world he built is fantastical but also has that element of reality where nobody is above it all.

Band of Brothers for me, but GoT is still entertaining, at least compared to the walking dead.
Ever seen Dune and Battleship Galactica (About diversion from books)?

There's always going to be people who moan about how a book series is adapted onto the screen. You literally can't satisfy these people.

Now if you want to debate pieces of the book that would have better served the story that's fine, but you cannot literally translate everything, certain things just can't be executed well on screen - like bringing back a brilliant female actor to be a (for the most part) mute zombie
Yea and there always will be people who never know original from where shows gets it's ideas and claim bad fanfiction greatest show ever made.

    • Urban Fantasy takes place in a modern urban as opposed to rural or historical setting, and thus can be viewed as a type of low fantasy.
    • Dark Fantasy uses fantasy to create a sense of horror or dread. Since it often has a real-world setting, there is an overlap with low fantasy.
    • Paranormal Romance, of which the best-known variety is the vampire romance, is nearly always low fantasy.
    • Superhero Fiction may count as low fantasy if the hero's powers have a supernatural rather than a scientific (or pseudoscientific) explanation.
    • Magical Realism has a largely realistic view of the world but introduces supernatural elements. While authors such as Gene Wolfe[15] and Terry Pratchett[16] regard it as fantasy, it has been claimed as a different genre on the grounds that in magical realism the supernatural events are usually not included in the worldview of the human characters while in low fantasy they usually live alongside them.[17][18]

See the difference? GoT is magical realism or low-fantasy at best. Don't write about something you have no idea of.

No idea, I have not really watched it outside of small snippets here and there. I prefer to watch TV shows and anime after they are completed, as I abhor waiting for years for new seasons.

Yeah this is a nice benefit of coming to a show late can just binge watch.

GoT has like 12 more episodes left (6 more now then another lengthy break). I would just start watching now. If you find you're binge watching, just slow it down a bit and you won't have much of a wait for the final season. only beacuse it gets harder to avoid spoilers these days.

I don't know a single person who has watched the first 3 episodes who didn't go on to love it and watch all the rest.
