Whats the point of getting better gear in vanilla?

It seems as a caster your abilities do a locked set of damage based on rank, outside of stacking stam and mana is there a point to better gear?

spell power makes your abilities hit harder as well as attack power. Agi gave attack power to certain classes where strength for others. Casters just had spell power on gear.

int also gave spell crit, albeit not that much

Stacking stam was a major reason why you want gear considering it was a universal defense stat for all classes. I'm not sure why you would exclude that in your own question for why you want gear. In Vanilla, higher gear had better survival for harder content, with higher quality ones providing secondary and tertiary stats to supplement your progression.
