Free speech is important and should be protected, and should protect you, but it also needs to have moral boundaries.

Philosophically speaking, law follows morals, law doesn't set morals. As for boundaries, they exist in the form of incitement criminal laws. These tweets may fall under that, depending on interpretation. Personally, I would totally investigate them for incitement, some of them clearly endorse violence towards other people. And that's a boundary that you can't cross in civilised countries.

It's blatantly easy to track and it's even easier to track them down and it wouldn't really affect free speech, because free speech wasn't created to celebrate in the misery of others. It was created for you to be able to speak your mind, whilst respecting the boundaries of others.

Freedom of speech, not freedom from repercussions. We should never have any laws against people saying terrible things online. But if certain internet sites want to get these people fired, that's fair. I know of more than a few blogs that find racist and bigoted comments on FB/twitter, datamine the people who made them, and let their employers know what they're saying on social media. Entirely fair game.

Again, private repercussions isn't what the dude asked for. He asked for Government retaliation against these tweets. That (probably) doesn't compute as easily as he thinks it does. Twitter banning the accounts and those dudes getting fired? Entirely different ballpark. And they're fair game in that.

It wasn't all that long ago that human morals and decency wanted to censor violence in video games and blamed TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the Columbine shootings.

People have a right to be tasteless dicks, and we have a right to call them tasteless dicks for acting like that. The country is better off overall for its adherence to broad free speech rights, even if we have to deal with these folks now and then.
