make sure you're not hitting mobs in the room next to you, there's a high chance that's the reason it bugs out for you.
plenty of AOE abilities can cross walls.

Actually helped a guy with this yesterday.

We jumped down in separate rooms, killed everything we could until meter was full. We then swapped room and clicked the levers and entered next room. Cleared it and he got the achievement.

We swapped before clicking the lever. Maybe that can help.
