a mechanical drive will never reach sata 3 speeds anyway

I think you should keep it. HDDs won't get capped by sata 2 unless you go raid0. But if you need an sata 3 drive then change it.

well im building a system in a month or 2 and i didnt want the prices of HDD to get to high before i buy one, what im asking is is it worth the $75 or should i get one at 6gb/s speed?
is it much better then 3gb/s?

I'd return it, since we can't be sure how long Best Buy had it and whether or not it was in one of the bad batches Seagate sent out. I have one and I can tell you.... it gets rough.

TL;DR: return and get the WD Caviar Black or if they have a Samsung Spinpoint F3 get that over the others.

Nope definitely referring to the model number. Full model will be a Seagate Barracuda (insert size) 7200.1 or 7200.11. The 7200 is an indicator of RPM and I believe the .1 or .11 indicates firmware version.

Unless it says by the model number I don't believe it is mentioned on the box. I've always purchased drives in bulk so never experienced a hard drive in a sealed box.

take it back have them open it and check the firmware version. this way they can know if they have faulty merchandise and you don't lose your return warranty.

Yeah but don't assume they will be able to immediately replace it, right now all of their HDD factories are shut down. =X

I got the same the other day, but mine rang up as $99. Strange. The $79 one linked in the thread about the flood was online only and is OEM, so if you don't need cables/instructions/etc then you could save another $20 (excluding shipping, if any).

    -----------

I'm curious as to why the WD Caviar Black hasn't gone up in price at Best Buy. It's cheaper than the price of the caviar blue on most of the sites pcpartpicker shows. I wonder if Best Buy has a large stock or something.

Edit: Actually it seems the Caviar Black has gone up $20 at Best Buy online. Still the same price or cheaper than most of the Blues on pcpartpicker.

Samsung's HDD division got bought out by Seagate this year as well. Less big players for us consumers. : (
