[Music] Noob DJ/New to the bizniz looking for some help

So, Ive decided to put my bassguitar on the shelf because playing in a band is taking to much time for me atm.
I sorta recently (2-3 months ago) started to listen to alot of house/dubstep/electronica music and found myself liking it a bunch. I used to almost only listen to rock/metal but after listening to the formentioned I can see alot of similarities between the 2.

I have these ideas in my brain on how I would like to make songs, but I have no idea what software and hardware to get. Im planning on getting a Macbook or something to have on stage, but dont want to be caught in the automix trap. I have been trying out Ableton but havent really gotten into it. When I was recording with my band we used Cubase and its so different.

TLDR: Software/hardware for making music and DJing?

Depends on how much you want to spend. And how much dedication you want to put into the whole thing.

Ableton Live is the program most DJ's I know use. But as you said, it's quite difficult to handle
Fruity Loops might also be an alternative.
Virtual DJ is a the thing to go with if you want to just fool around and make a few quick mixes. I'm pretty sure you can hook a midi-controller or decks to it. You can just mix with it. Nothing more nothing less

Hope i could help a little

Cheers for the answer! Nice page. Fruity Loops is sort of out of question, mostly because im sick and tired of how similar every song made in Fruity loops sound.

Im gonna get stuck in with Ableton I think.

As Bene said, it really depends on how much you want to spend. Right now, I'm producing songs with Reason (http://www.propellerheads.se/products/reason/). It's a pretty wicked piece of software. Give you a lot of synths and sounds to play around with. I'm in the process of making dubstep and prog. house with it, and it's sounds pretty awesome.

As for decks and actual Djing/mixing, it depends if you want to go digital or vynly, or even CDJ. Most people choose to start out with vynyl decks and then either stick with them or progress to digital mixing. Personally, I started with digital and haven't looked back since. You can get some nice cheap controllers from Numark and Hercules (I'll post links to them down below). You can map effects and samples to your contollers and do some live mixing, too.

    Numark: http://www.amazon.com/Numark-MIXTRAC...1252007&sr=1-5

If you have more money to spend on controllers and software, I would recommend you check out any made by Native Instruments. Traktor seems to be the best place to start, if you have the coin.
