"I would go back to EVE if..."

I like EVE Online. I realy do. I realy REALY want to play it. But many things in it keep me away. And a list of things that, if changed, would bring me back. Add yours!

-Voiceovers. I can't remember a single voiceover in the game. Alot less immersion.

-Skill system. I could go on about this in great lenghts but to tl;dr it: Remove skill leveling, you buy the skill and learn it once, using weapons/equipment levels that skill (like Guild Wars 2 or Battlefield 3). Waiting real time for skills to fill arbitrary numbers is boring and very disconnected. This simple doesn't work for me.

-Missions. Make it a clear story progression like the Arcs, make a story, voiceovers, scripted fights. Right now all feels like repeatable missions with 2-3 rooms with baddies that you kill. Over and over. I realy dont care about the world of eve because the world doesnt tell me why i should.

-Flying. I know it's space but seriously let the small craft fly like fighters. Right now there is absolutely no sense of speed, distance or.... anything realy. Make it like in the trailers show and it's awesome.

-User Interface. Let it be moddable. The stock one sucks. Big time.

-Shields and weapons effects. All look bland and uncaracteristic. Games in the past did it better. All i see is a line from the enemy ship to mine.

-Tracking speed, falloff distance... All that mumbo-jumbo is boring. Show that on the interface with "3D holographic overlays" like the trailers show. Advertising is so nice for EVE but when you actually login and start playing its so bland or crappy. I see my guns hitting the target but no damage is being done.

-Combat log. That small message in the middle of the screen doesnt count.

-A few more but i dont want to write too much :P
This pretty much sums it up for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiXug8Q6OoE

This makes me wonder how bad it was to begin with

So basically you love the concept of a space-fighting game. Because you want to change almost every core aspect of the game.
All those things you listed are what make EVE what it is.

You've got a weird definition of the core. You're telling me a non-moddable UI and unhelpful combat log, for example, make EVE, EVE?

Here I thought it was that player interactions were basically unlimited and cooperation/deception/entrepeneuring were all highly encouraged, all within the unlimited frontier of space.

well to me EVE aint about the battles and quests its about TRADING getting rich in ISK.

Sure you can take the two examples he used that are probably the least applicable to my comment and make me seem like a fool. But he also wants to get rid of the skill training system. Which IS what EVE is all about. You have to invest in time to train for anything you want to do in EVE.

Getting into EVE is hard and takes a long long time. I can see why it would be fun at the highest levels, though. Building a whole empire, space fights of 500+ people, the epic-ness of seeing a fucking massive capital ship or titan.

They say they wont open up the ui due to people hacking, while i dont really agree with it, eve would be a shit game if hacking was possible. The skill thing i have a small problem with though i think there should be like 3 catagorys that you could train at once, like ship/worldstuff/weapons, and different things fall into different places.

The skill training is the whole game? I can understand the qualm about that, just not the rest of his complaints. Because everything else he said was pretty periphery too, aside from the skill system. Everything else is an aesthetic or immersive improvement, or a QoL issue.

EVE is a game I will never go back to. It's a space trading game with the shittiest combat system attached. I'm not interested in a Space Trading MMO, so the game isn't for me. I just couldn't get into it

The only issue I ever had with eve was the skill training other than that it was a great game.

the main reason i dont go back to it is just because of how boring the 'leveling' part is. and by 'leveling' i mean the first year when you have to just grind out isk as you wait for your skills to be high enough to compete with others.

as far as i could tell, you could either mine, or run missions. mining gets old FAST. you basically afk in front of an asteroid for a few mins, or open up the in game browser and watch youtube or something.
i resubbed a few months ago, just to see what had changed. i went to my agent dude to get a mission. mission was: go over to this system, about 5 jumps away, and pick up <random cargo>. So, either you sit there and keep clicking >warpgate >next system, wait a couple of mins, do it again, wait a couple of mins, do it again (you get the point). Or, you put it on auto pilot, which is slower, but you can walk away for 10mins while it does it for you (and hope no one attacks you , otherwise you lose everything you're carrying inc the ship).

I'd imagine it would be a fun game if i had a year of skills and isk grinding under my belt. at which point i could join a decent corp and go fight others over control of systems or whatever.

I've been playing Eve on and off for about 5 months now. I say on and off because skills take alot of time and sometimes I would just log on to que a 2week skill and log off. Anyways, here are the reasons I enjoy it right now:
    - Music is soo relaxing
    - I love space type stuff.
    - Sense of accomplishment I get in this game has only ever been had for in in EQ1, my first MMO. WoW hasn't given me a sense of accomplishment since BC, but maybe Uludar. In this game I still look at certain ships in awe because I know the time it took to get a ship and outfit it like I've seen some. I don't feel that way in other MMO's when I look at people's gear. I used to, but not now. So when I got my first Battleship, it just felt good.
    - I actually like the controls to a certain extent. Makes it feel more realstic in my mind of what I think controlling a Battleship would really feel like.

I could probably list a bunch more, but these are the things I stand out when someone asks me what I like about the game. I'm not vet, so my 5 months of experience with the game doesn't mean a whole lot, but that is my 2cents.

Someone post the tutorial for Eve, WoW AoC, and warhammer where Eve online has a graveyard

Also, only reason I would go to eve is cause I would work for CCP .... They're in my country

Unless they removed it, this is what the tactical overlay does. No one really uses it because in the end if you've played long enough you know your optimals and falloff by heart.

Personally I think eve has fewer issues than you seem to. The main things I would change are give a more approachable game to newer players. It feels like an insurmountable task to be a new player going up against entrenched players. I don't mean that new players should be just as good as people who have played a long time, but there needs to be a place for them. There needs to be something that is worth doing for them. Right now an experienced player will always be better at combat, mining, mission running etc.

Make it so there is diminishing value in combat for experienced players for instance. Make experienced command players valuable but tons of them redundant. You can pack in the newer players in frigates for power, and have the experienced command ships, but then other experienced players basically flying frigates. So experienced players still have value in leadership, but new players can get in and be valuable too.

Another thing might be to change how skills work, because right now, that also makes older players always better in every way, unlike a game like say, WoW. Another might be to make it benificial to have multiple characters that do different things but get there quickly instead of one character that can get good at everything. Make it so characters can be customized with skills to get very good at certain things but not so good at others. This means that an old player might have a lot of characters very good at things, but a new player might still be able to get that one character up to level that's very good and can get in the mix. This is a value of WoW where there is a fairly quick skill cap but people can make many other characters to try new things or combine character's trade skills in order to make more stuff.

I also think they need to change the fundamental pod thing. I know this is a core story element, but I think it makes space a bit lonely. I think they could flesh out the universe a lot if players were actually commanders of ships with crew instead of lonely solo pilots of giant ships. It just seems silly. Would work much better for in ship movement and stuff too if you had a big crew. You could hire npc members for stat bonuses too. Would make much more sense to have crew members for navigation, combat tactics, science, etc. The whole idea that there's lots of humans but then there's these giant ships that are giant just because even though they still have a single crew member just doesn't work well. The rest of the story between all the factions would work just fine with actual crewed ships too.

I agree missions need mixed up a bit instead of warp to X, kill Y though.

I love EVE, I regret having had to stop playing for a significant amount of time due to how the training system works. I actually do like how it works, specially now that they removed learning skills. Yes, it takes time to get to the big stuff, but time is the only limited resource in EVE. You can be in plenty of fun ships in 3-5 months if you have a proper skill plan. And you can do stuff in the mean time. Not like you have to go straight to a BC to have fun, I still love flying frigs.

Regular missions are just there to be grindable income, they are not there to tell a story, only the Arcs are like that. I enjoy doing missions, trying out unconventional fits, trying to beat my own times.

I don't understand your issue with flying, frigs are faster than cruisers are faster than battleships, yes, they did nerf speed a few years back due to balance, no, I wasn't happy, but I adapted.

UI is ugly, but it works, I would not mind some upgrade on this front.

Weapon effects, they added some very nice turret effects in the summer. Unless you are complaining about the actual beam/projectile animations. Missiles look really cool already. Shields I guess are a little bland.

Tracking speed, falloff and other stats make the guns. You can already turn on the tactical overlay which displays ranges in a 3d projection. Tracking is impossible to show graphically.

There is a log, sadly, it empties every time you do a session change.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to play EVE, I admit the game isn't for everyone. I'll keep flying my internet spaceships since they are Serious Business, and enjoying my Spreadsheets with Lasers.

EDIT: Rukh makes a few good points as well, but I don't agree with all of them. Some of those things make EVE.
About the pod and ships, technically, all ships above frigs have crews according to the lore and that might come into play once we have full ambulation. The pod itself is what sets us, the players, apart from the regular folk of the universe(ses). We are the immortal capsuleers.

Oh yeah, I second what ElGeFe said, You dont' have to fly the bigger ships to have fun. In fact out of all my ships, ranging from Basic Frigs to Basic Battleships, the Frigs are the most engaging and fun to fly in for me. Fast moving, always thinking type of gameplay.

Have you tried Black Prophecy? It's combat might be more up your alley. The only big flaw when I played it in beta was the repetitive missions.
