Why all the hype for Skyrim?

This isn't a troll post or anything, I legitimately want to know about this game. I have never played the Elder Scrolls before and I was never aware of any hype over any previous Elder Scrolls. But Skyrim seems to be getting TONS of hype.

This has gotten me interested in it. What kind of game is Skyrim? Is it an RPG? Is it multiplayer in any way? Do you need to have played the previous Elder Scrolls in order to understand this one?

Any info on it would be appreciated, it might be something fun to tie me over until SWTOR.

The best western RPG in history.

The series isn't flawless but most games are of OUTSTANDING quality.

And each modding community has kept each previous installment alive for LONG past its original release date..

Take oblivion for example..came out in 2006...its mod community has kept it alive to THIS VERY DAY almost 7 years....think of how long skyrim will last..

Single player RPG, as far as I know.

Supposed to be really cool. Have a guy at work who'll be taking a day off at launch. I myself don't quite understand the hype.

There was a ton of hype for oblivion in 2006. for all other info, check out the megathread.
It is a great game, so much content and so much re-playability.

Pretty much what Malcor said. Elder Scrolls 3 and 4 both carry outstanding names in the RPG community. This is due to fantastic story, world, depth. It's just a fantastic game series, and Skyrim will be fixing a majority of the problems faced in the previous games. That is why it will be one of, if not the game of the year. Take one of the best things in it's category, and make it 10 times better, and that is what you are getting with Skyrim.

The elder scrolls is a very old well-respected series. It's been around since Arena in 1994. Traditionally, they're all first person perspective rpgs, with beyond-sandbox levels of freedom. You're basically planted in a world and given a push in a direction, but you can basically do and be whatever or whoever you want. The team behind the game puts monumental amounts of work into even the most basic things. Morrowind and Oblivion have been Game of The Year, and many people are anticipating Skyrim to also earn that title.

There is no multiplayer, it's all you and your character. The amount of customization you can have is ludicrous. Playing the previous games isn't necessary, but it will help you understand a lot about the history of the world you're in. You can find books in the world and actually read them. Some of them are game lore, some others are actual complete works of fiction. It has visceral, exciting combat, and lets you play the game basically however you want.

The complete freedom is a huge draw to most people.

The greatest game series next to Halo that I've ever played. Started with Daggerfall, then Morrowind and then Oblivion. If you've played all these, you would be superhyped for Skyrim. It's been like.. 5 years since the last TES game, no wonder why people can't wait for the next amazing storypiece!

Why it's hyped though: I think it blossomed during Oblivion, for the rest of gamers. It wasn't really expected to be THE GAME OF THE YEAR, but quickly became extremely recognizable and loved by gamers all around the globe, it had amazing graphics, a great story, unlimited quests and just this.. open free world.
I think what struck me the most was this level of mysticsism and the majestic way it appeared, walking in the woods, seeing these huge elven ruins and forts, and obviously - the cities.

I could probably write a 10pager about the features in the previous TES games, but I don't got time for that - you should just know it's bloody amazing and it's a must buy for every RP gamer out there.

If you REALLY like the open world concept and are willing to deal with a complete lack of story, uninteresting characters and shitty first person combat, Bethseda games might be for you. But if you're an actual RPG fan avoid the hype machine and save your money.

Can't tell if you're trolling, or if you're honestly serious. TES IS the bastion of hope for open world Roleplayers and folks that want a sandbox, without an urban modern atmosphere.

If they somehow released a new TES every two years, with their current level of quality, I would quit playing MMORPGs and live off user made mods.

Want new races, armors, weapons, continents, mounts and game mechanics? There's user based mods for that!

Ive been playing it for about 3 days now, and it is amazing. The gameplay is great. I love the freedom you get. You have quests you can do, OR you can just do literally whatever you want. You see a big mountain in the background? That isnt just a backdrop scene, you can actually climb that mountain. You can kill anyone or anything that moves, granted there are punishments for killing the wrong people. Overall it is just a fun game, and will suck about 400+ hours out of my just like morrowind and oblivion did

That's a little harsh but I do agree with the first person combat comment, I hated it in the other elder scrolls. But I do love the open world that they have.

To put it into perspective, I would blow up a small orphanage to get this game right now.

It's a really solid, well made, and overall just fucking amazing series imho

If you don't know much about The Elder Scrolls series, I beg you to go spend $20 and grab a copy of Oblivion. It would be hard to describe in text a game of this caliber.

You do not need to have any previous experience with TES to understand Skyrim because the story is set in another land, at a different time.

Out of the box, the game is single player (but don't worry, you'll forget other people exist anyhow).

  17. #17
I dunno. Ever since my first MMO, I can't get interested in single player RPG's, no matter how good they are.

  18. #18
Actually I am quite a bit surprised by the "mainstream" hype just as I was with deus ex. I am well aware that the predecessors morrowind and oblivion had a dedicated fanbase which I personally absolutely love for all the mods and the fun I had with both titles but it seems to be quite a lot bigger than it was back then.

The Elder Scrolls is hands down one of the best rpg game series of all time. Past the tutorial, you are free to do whatever you want. Do quests, kill citizens, kill citizens for the assassin guild, go out and find dungeons to clear for fun, create nearly every aspect of your character, or do the storyline quests which are pretty well written.

You do not need any experience of the other games in the series (though it does help in knowing the history of the world). In fact they've made it a point to make each game happen a good length of time away from each other. If you get a chance, play it. Do not hesitate. PLAY IT.

Technically this is only partly true. In the first elder scrolls, it takes place all over the continent (thank god they put in an auto travel function). So far the ones past it have been narrowed down into one region, this case the region is Skyrim, the land of the barbaric Nords.

Skyrim is probably going to be the best open world rpg ever made, seriously. Skyrim is a game where you can do whatever you want, a lot like Grand Theft Auto but less gangsta and more Celtic. This is the type of game where you can chose to ignore the main story line, and then have more fun doing everything you shouldn't be doing.

    For example:

    • Almost anything can be stole
    • You can dual wield weapons and spells, combining spells for a bigger and badder effect.
    • You can kill almost anyone and can be part of almost any group.
    • There is the Dark Brotherhood, they assassinate people, you can join them and kill people in the coolest ways.
    • There is the Mage's Guild, they'll teach you how to use spells, make your own, and enchant your own weapons.
    • There is the Arena, where you can be an epic champion and fight and win money and armor and more awesome shit
    • Spells are limitless, there are ones that call storms, one's that place traps, one's that trap souls, and ones that disguise you or make people like you.
    • You can get married to what/whoever you want.
    • You can kill dragons and steal their souls.
    • There is over 300 hours of gameplay.
    • You can be a ninja, or a thief, or a battle mage, or a monk, or a plate warrior, or a lancer, or a combination of all that shit plus some more shit that you didn't even know existed
    • There are hundreds of weapons to use, armor to wear, and a bunch of different classes of spells to use, including but not limited to:
      1. Conjuring - Summon armor or creatures
      2. Destruction - blow shit up
      3. Restoration - blow shit up then heal yourself
      4. Mysticism - make shit float
      5. Illusion - make people think you're someone else, or love you
      6. Alteration - make doors unlock, water walk, breath underwater
    • Its absolutely beautiful.

Just watch that... and cream your pants.
