Maybe this thread motivates a couple of fellow mages to also give this fight a try. But be advised, that owning the legendary staff and a proper fire-spec are a must. However, with the upcoming fire-buff, mages without the legendary should stand a chance as well.
I won't go into any more detail, but feel free to check my spec and glyphs to figure the tactics out for yourself =)

At first I didn't think much of this, till i read the small print of you being a fire mage (didn't notice the forum was Mage, as I went from the home page of MMO-champion).

What other things have you soloed as a mage? Really curious to what they can do. =]

Malygos, Sartharion and Kael in Tempest Keep as well as nonheroic Altairus and Slabhide. I'm a sucker for farming mounts :X
But except for maybe Malygos, those are pretty easy to kill. Farmed them long before I got a hold on the legendary.

Nice job man, although your spec isn't far from a raid spec, so it's not very revealing. I suppose you used Frost Armor though.

I'd imagine something similar to how we did the old Onyxia, although with much more emphasis on burning her in P1 and P3, and the fire spec obviously being for whelp handling.

You took Blazing Speed... hm, whelps hitting you and you outrun her? She that slow? Gonna "yo mama is so fat..." every black drake I see then.

How does one solo malygos exactly without hitting enrage in phase 3?

Perhaps Mirror Images on ground phase 1

I can think it as follows:

1 phase: MI, power ups, TW, let the images tank and burn Onyxia to phase 3 before whelps show up
3 phase: Dots+smart kiting or enough dps to take her down before TW runs out
