Just curious for the reason so many US shows seem to be on hold till the beginning of January, and across multiple channels? Is there something special on for the next 6 weeks, of is this just normal practice?

The holidays. Ratings are probably lower so they wait until afterwards.
Happens every year. It's annoying, but they don't like to air new episodes during the holiday season.
Thank god that Sons of Anarchy season finale is this Tuesday and I don't have to wait until January. I'd die.
Depends on the show and how many episodes it has and if it's airs on a network channel like NBC or a cable channel. A show like Tera Nova only got 13 episodes so it finishes mid-December. A show like Law & Order SVU usually has 22 or so episodes so it usually stops broadcasting late November/beginning of December and will start airing new episodes in January.
I think the one thing that has happened is it used to be many shows took mini-breaks during the World Series but with ratings down for the World Series many networks are airing new episodes against it so come November/December shows are stopping airing new episodes earlier. It also used to be November was used as a "sweeps" month where they used the ratings they got for that month to set advertising rates. For whatever reason this doesn't seem to be happening much anymore.
Thank you for all the replies. Time to watch Stargate again in meantime.
