Does anyone else have a feeling?

That this MMO will be able to compete with WoW? I know it seems like a silly argument.. but honestly this is the first MMO to come out since I started playing WoW in beta that I thought, "Wow, this game looks pretty good.. I REALLY hope they don't screw it up".. and it seems like they did an awesome job.

I didn't really fall for the overhyping of Aion / Rift / Age of Conan(Didn't even pick this trash game up after pre ordering it when I heard some friends opinion talking about it after the release) / the list goes on.

So.. Do you guys think this will just be another "WoW Killer" MMO that falls off after a few months.. or do you think it is here to stay?

I personally hope this game works out. I'm excited to get accustomed to a game after playing WoW for so long that has the potential to follow in it's path.

In fairness to Rift, it was actually a decent game, and if more of my friends played it/I didn't have a lot on at the time, I probably would've given it more time. I think they also shot themselves in the foot by going all out with targetting WoW in their marketing. The Old Republic seems certain to pull in a lot of subs, and I think it's the perfect storm - a strong IP coming at the end of an expansion cycle where a lot of people aren't blown away by the current patch which doesn't need a significant time investment outside of a couple of raids a week. The real test will be when people hit end-game and MoP comes, but they can co-exist just fine with a very healthy amount of subs.

I got a feeling. That tonight's gonna be a good night. That tonight's gonna be a good good night.

I hope I have that stuck in your head now, just like the song is stuck in my head after reading the OP's thread title.

Anyhoo, considering Rift is still going strong and that was basically WoW with extra points placed in Realistic Graphics, I'd say SWTOR will do pretty well. It's got a lot of strong things going for it: a brilliant developer, a strong and rich IP with an incredibly extensive universe, and a well-timed release date: as much as I love WoW, I know full well that it's currently hitting a lull, just as it always does when a new expansion is on the horizon. SWTOR is hitting at just the right point to grab many subscribers from WoW.

Will it be able to keep those subscribers though? We can only wait and see. I'm sure both MMOs will be able to live alongside one another. They'll just provide strong competition for each other, which can only be a good thing for us subscribers.

This game will be second behind WoW for a long time. Bioware + Star Wars = Money.

Imo the first patch/content release will be the decider - it will set out the marker for how the lifecycle of the game will be.

If its big - with lots of content and changes wanted by the community as a whole it will be an indication of longevity.

I have high hopes - wow died before WotlK where it catered to casuals completly.

that's what I'm thinking as well.. but many of my friends i've talked to about playing are skeptical just due to the fact that Bioware is the company behind this.

The only thing I seem to dislike is the UI for the action bar, etc. I hope there is some way of changing that after the game has been out for a bit.

And when I get that feeling, I want sexual healing.

I love Rift, but without server mergers and some fairly major fixes, it's not going to get any better. There's no way they'll take their MMO off the net within the next few years, so I guess the worst that will happen is a switch to a F2P model.

Anyway, I don't see this happening to TOR. Months before the game even had a release date, we formed a community for it on a forum for another game. We've been waiting for it for three years. The vast majority of testers on the open weekend absolutely loved it, and they have an unprecedented amount of preorders. I don't know about everyone else, but I've not been so excited for the opportunity to sit in front of a screen for hours on end since I discovered pornography. I think this game will do well, and if not, I have faith in Bioware and EA (yes, even EA) to manage it well and act accordingly to ensure it stays a fun game.

I doubt SW:TOR will kill WoW, but it will certainly create some tough competition, especially looking at how many people are going to be playing it.

Also yeah, Rift was actually pretty good. It just suffered a bit from slightly bland graphics, no pre-game lore (like Warcraft and SW), and that they shot themselves in the foot with their anti-WoW marketing.

This is true. Where many hyped games fail is how the execute after launch. How Bioware handles introducing content and needed features will determine the longevity of the game. Specifically more end game content and warzones will need to come at a good clip.

I thing its gonna be better than WoW after some time.
People are getting tired off WoW, they want somethng diffrent.
And this is good for WoW, a fair competition will make the WoW devs more creative for sure.

This is the first mmo since WoW that has a serious chance of reaching the same amount of popularity as WoW.

AoC, WAR, Rift, Aion etc. etc. didnt have a strong IP behind them, and some of thoose games were just terrible, add that Star Wars is more popular and known than Warcraft, after all Warcraft is based on previous games and books, Star Wars started of with 3 amazing movies, books, games and more movies and more books.

An example, my 9 year old son knows alot about starwars, all he knows about warcraft is wow.

Regarding the game itself, swtor is imo a better game than wow was at release, and from what I've seen it's comparable to wow, even though the game isnt even released yet.

will it kill wow? no, wow will still go strong, they'll without a doubt loose alot of subs to swtor, but still pick up new ones, as always, the only ones who can kill an mmo is the devs themselves, in my eyes Blizzard are hurting wow badly atm, but alot of people still love the game, and power to them.

Besides, I prefere more than 1 game that has alot of success, competition is healthy, and it will only benefit us the gamers when wow get's a decent competitor, swtor gamers should hope that wow will still go strong, and wow gamers should seriously hope for swtor to be a huge success, it might just be a wake up call to the wow devs to try harder than they've done for some years now.

It will be great game. At least i will play it but whole term Wow killer is stupid. I actually enjoyed my almost 7 years on wow. But like said its 7 years for one game, gets boring after a while.

I feel the exact same way you do OP. I have played Aion, Rift and AoC, was never extremely hyped for them, but they brought me a month or two of fun.
The thing is, none of those games really *did* it for me. I never sat by my desk running through talent calculators, item lists, game data etc. to learn as much I could about the class and game I was getting into. They never made me lie awake at night all jittery for release.

When I heard BioWare was making an MMO, I immediately jumped on Google and started searching away, then when I found out that it was Star Wars I had a tiny heartattack. I just knew that this was a game I would love. And I wholeheartedly do.

Though, I'm mostly a bit anxious, for the franchise as a whole. BioWare has a lot weighing on them with SWTOR, but I have a feeling they will do great.

You're talking about Eletronic Arts. EA has nothing to do with the game itself, they only handle marketing and legal. Lucas Arts owns all the rights. BioWare handles the game itself.

I've convinced 2 other people who have never played an MMO before (or even knew what they were) to give TOR a try with me. I didn't do that with WoW, but mainly because of the stigma attached to it. The fact that I'm comfortable talking about TOR is a pretty good indication, I think, of the possibilities TOR has.

Not really. It's in my opinion just bigger handled than other MMo's like Rift. EA is a big company, a very big (Not going to talk about their crappyness, but you get what I mean) So it gets more publicity from outside the Star Wars fan base.

So it'll last a bit longer, and die a little bit slower.

I honestly got a good feeling about this game. I think what I've read here and there in the forums helps the feeling. Not so much the technical details (even though they are important) it just seems the community is boiling. There are haters sure but mostly there seems to already be a strong base of people willing to give it a fair try.
I'm not sure I'm getting my ideas through properly. Forget a poor French person trying hard to make sense

To be fair, most "WoW killers" in the past were not bad games at all. OK, Aion was a shitty game, but Age of Conan was actually decent, as was Warhammer online. Both their problems was they were released when still in deep beta status which alienated players, resulting in problems polishing the game enough to attract and keep new players which led to further financing problems and cutbacks, etc pp.
Rift is a good game, not my cup of tea and from what I heard the last patches screwed up balance a little but it made a decent enough impression on me when I played it for a month and a half.

TOR on the other hand... yeah, it is here to stay, prepare for that.

Age of Conan was decent? WHHHATTTTTTT
