Commando Gunnery help

I use to be a healer and now I switch to dps (Gunnery). I want to start Questing and not just Class quest pvp, and Space battle. My question is:

Should i use a Rifle or an Assault Cannon?

Assault Cannon is the commando weapon, Vanguard uses Rifles.
