Pokemon Yellow, pikachu vs onyx...compare the difficulty

Most of you at least age of 17 or older remember pokemon yellow. It was awesome, you were basically ash, you had pikachu follow you around 24/7.

    It was GREAT...

    Oh wait, I'm forgetting something...

Pikachu vs Onyx...and like most people who were new to pokemon games like myself you just leveled up pikachu cause he was the strongest, easiest pokemon to use. Then you came to brock and literally it felt like I got my gameboy slapped to my face (remember that big grey brick...yeah those hurt).

I once heard someone compare heroic ragnaros (pre-nerf) to beating onyx with pikachu in pokemon yellow.

I thought it was hilarious because it was 100% true. It was damn near impossible unless you got either

    A) God forsaken lucky

    or

    B) Your pikachu was a god amongst others

So I wanna hear eveybody elses comparisons to it

Huh. Pokemon had static leveling so you just sorta grind for a bit and then beat him if you insist on using pikachu. Of course almost everyone captured the plant guy right outside that place to get an easy win.

erm I captured a pidgey the first time, leveled him to a pidgeotto...lol...and barely beat him

The prolbme here is you're trying to make a joke out of it...

Yes, it was probably funny when you heard it somewhere else... but you can't force a joke out like that...

I always just caught a mankey. A fighting type, it could learn a low level attack that would beat onyx pretty easily. It was in that patch of grass right outside the town.

I had my pikachu at level 25 and rocked the boat, dono why I managed to get him so high but I was just a kid, okey? :<

I had a Gameboy Color, yo.

I don't recall what I used to beat him though...

Fun little fact: You can trade Pikachu to another human player. Bye bye, annoying little rat!

I'm too young so I missed Pokemon Yellow
On my Pokemon Sapphire my Swampert was lvl 86 by the time I beat Steven (Champion).

Jesus way to kill humor, please go elsewhere if you wanna be depressing...I'm trying to have a fun conversation here...

What was so hard about getting Pikachu to 15 to learn Double Team? Assuming you mean beating the game with nothing but Pikachu, since using any other pokemon makes Brock a pushover.

Mankey was available in Yellow west of Viridian City, and it learned Low Kick early in Yellow as well. Pretty much the only way to beat Brock in yellow. better question was how people did it in Blue/Red picking Charmander. Even worse, next trainer is Misty, whose water types kicked Charmander's ass as well.

I trained my Pokemon in the underground wild grass spots. It was like fight club man, Onyx was no match! :P

Beating Brock with just pikachu doesn't take skill... because it is impossible unless you are like in your 20s. You would have be incredibly lucky i.e. Paralyze with thundershock AND get several crits. Pikachu has crap defense, not so great special attack and onix resists it. Not to mention you also have to beat Geodude before hand... yep impossible.

train pikachu untill you get slam.. lvl 22 or something?? i dont remember and faceroll trough it

or do the easy thing, get caterpie .. level it to 16 or something , you get a butterfly with confusion.

    noob

you should have leveled a mankey and trololololol'd brock with low kick!

on top of fighting type moves being super effective to rock type pokemon, low kick's damage was granted a bonus based on the weight of a Pokemon.

Yes, I am truly deserving of the title "Pokemon Nerd".

This is pretty much what I did. I think Mankey was level 3 or sow and Low Kick was learned at level 9. But yeah once I tried using Pikachu and only managed to beat Onyx with Slam at level 20 I believe.

Pokemon Yellow, good sir. You couldn't obtain charmander at that point.
On-topic: OP, you're aware they made Mankey available a lot earlier in that game specifically to use against Brock, right? You only had to train it to level 9 for it to learn low kick too :3
