    Logs show Paladin tank being hit despite ctc cap?

    Hey there, my guild has been starting Heroic Dragon Soul progression and our MT is a Paladin. I worked with him on his CTC cap gearing, as at first he was over it by a few %, which could be better spent on extra stam/avoidance. Now, on his armory I'm showing him still at 106.01% avoidance (17.41 dodge, 16.61 parry, 66.99 block and the 5% boss miss chance). I'm not sure if the armory includes values boosted by buffs (str/agil buff, kings, etc), or flasks/food which would boost him even further past the cap.

    However, after our H Morchok kill I was going through the logs and noticed that he had some hits listed under melee dmg taken (also noticed our DK had blood presence bug and took 4 crits during the kill -.-). He had almost 100% uptime on str/agil buff, so am I just misreading the log or is something else going on? He also had hits taken on our H Yor'sajh and Zon'ozz attempts. Any help would be appreciated!

    I don't think Blocking is avoidance
    If I understand correctly, Blocking just significantly reduces the damage[COLOR="red"]
    So he has 106.01% mitigation...not avoidance

    Yea blocks reduce damage in Cata. I think in Wotlk a block = 100% mitigated damage but now it's just reduced

    No you misunderstand the CTC cap. Blocking negates 30% of a hits dmg, so once your dodge/block/parry/boss 5% miss chance add up to 102.4%, you'll never take a "full" hit, since every hit you don't have miss/dodge/parry only hits you for 70% of a normal hit. However our logs still show him being hit.

    Last I knew armory was showing before DR you have to run the macro in game to find out your actual CTC.

    Using the following formula in the expression editor:
    (sourceName = "Morchok"
    and targetName = "Captncoke"
    and type = 1
    and spell != "Stomp"
    and spell != "Earthen Vortex"
    and spell != "Black Blood of the Earth")
    or (
    targetName = "Morchok"
    and type = 5
    )
    the following is shown:

    There is 1 actual true Melee hit, which still shouldn't occur if he is actually CTC capped, but it's certainly not 8 full hits. Perhaps he was facing his back to the boss while running in?

    Remember, you only benefit from your avoidance if you're facing the attacker.

    Against heroic Morchok, in positioning him to absorb resonating crystals and/or stomps, he may be momentarily giving his back to the boss. Against Yor'sahj, it's the adds that are hitting him from behind, which is hard to avoid. For that, you'll notice those "hits" are for significantly less damage per hit than the blocked hits, since the blocks are for the much harder hitting boss. For Zon'ozz, he's probably moving the boss to catch the sphere and momentarily giving his back to the boss.

    He might need to work on his strafe skills a little bit, but the numbers look perfectly reasonable to me.

    Fury9000 is absolutely correct. You cannot parry or block when you are not facing the attacker.

    You can't dodge either. Only mobs can.

    This one hundred times over. You should always strafe. turning and running does not allow you to attack or Block, parry or dodge. It is one of the simlpest things but since Blizz put's turning on the keyboard people think they should do it. Don't. Stafe every were take turinig off you r keyboard and put some useful bindings. A and D should eb ur strafe with q and E being abilities. No I'm not saying no clicking , but those are the two best binds you can change to make ur lif e 100% better.

    I'm probably misunderstanding the CTC cap as well but aren't there diminishing returns on dodge and parry and you'll take the occasional hit because of this?

    no diminishing returns means that the first 1000 rating gives 10% dodge, and the 2nd 1000 rating will only give 5%... as you get more and rating, the bonus granted by the rating is less...

    however, a block is not 100% damage reduction like a parry or dodge, it is only 30%... imagine an unhittable tank, would be pretty hard to balance strategies around a boss that cant hit your tank?
