Every digit in a binary equation represents a power of two, starting at 2^0 when there is a 1 and a zero when there is a zero
Therefore 11111 would be (2^4) + (2^3) + (2^2) + (2^1) + (2^0) = 16 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 31
And 10100 would be (2^4) + 0 + (2^2) + 0 + 0 = 20 because the zeros represent zero rather than their respective power of two.
So basically, when you see a one, you plug in [2 ^ (n-1)] where n is the number of digits upto and including where that 1 is located (and starting from the right and going left), plug in zero where you see zero, and then just add all the numbers.

In the most common numerical system, called the decimal numeral system (the one most people always use when counting), you have the digits 0-9. You can count to 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 but when you get to 9, you're out of digits. What do you do? Well, you start another counter to the left of the first one, and start over. 9 -> 10; 1 0, one zero. 99 -> 100, one zero zero. The binary numerical system works in the same way, but only uses the numbers 0 and 1.

Decimalt = well...Decimal...duh
