    Every digit in a binary equation represents a power of two, starting at 2^0 when there is a 1 and a zero when there is a zero

    Therefore 11111 would be (2^4) + (2^3) + (2^2) + (2^1) + (2^0) = 16 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 31

    And 10100 would be (2^4) + 0 + (2^2) + 0 + 0 = 20 because the zeros represent zero rather than their respective power of two.

    So basically, when you see a one, you plug in [2 ^ (n-1)] where n is the number of digits upto and including where that 1 is located (and starting from the right and going left), plug in zero where you see zero, and then just add all the numbers.
