It's possible to upgrade a laptop's graphics card without causing complications?

I like laptops because I can sit with my family downstairs in the living room, and still play games. Then at the drop of a dime I can go upstairs into my room and continue playing when they all decide to go to bed. It essentially allows me to play and be social. I am semi-open to the idea of a desktop though.

If we were talking about a budget of 600-800 dollars (what I can get within the next 6 days prior to the release of GW2) what would be the recommended desktop and laptop equivalent?

The cards you will have to choose from will be very specific, usually tiny upgrades, and will be expensive and hard to install. For 800$ you can realistically get a laptop or desktop that should be able to run GW2, but the difference will be "Hey, I'm running it but lagging on low" vs "Hey, I'm running it smoothly on high with AA/shadows turned down"

with 600-800$ you can easily get both a laptop and a desktop that can run GW2 on high settings but desktops have the benefit of beeing more easily to upgrade.
A scenario: your graphics card gets outdated,
laptop: buy a new one or pay a lot of money and invest a lot of time to upgrade your laptop without gaining much performance
desktop: buy a new graphics card for 80-100$, install it in 5 minutes and play all new games on medium-high.

I understand all of that already.
You say I could easily get a Laptop that can run GW2, what did you have in mind?

I just browsed through some laptop sales sites and crap, it's madness how expensive laptops with decent graphics cards are, sorry but there isn't one for 800$ that could run GW2 on high settings :/ The best offer i found was a custom built laptop on the hp-website, that one could run GW2 on low-medium with 30-40 fps , a desktop for the same price on the same site could run it easily on high with 60+ fps.

Hello, a friend and I am considering to have a look at Guild wars 2.
We have spent a long time playing World of warcraft and other games together,
now I know that I have a computer that would be able to run GW2, the problem is my friend.
This is what he is currently running.

Operating System: Windows 7 Home premium 64-bit
    RAM (Memory) : 6144mb RAM
    CPUProcessor: Intel(r) Core(TM) i7 CPU 860 , 2.80GHz (8CPUs), ~2.8GHz
    Direct X: Direct X 11
GPU (Graphics card): ATI Radeon HD 5450

So the big question here is, would my friend be able to run it? and if so at roughly what performance
should he be able to expect?
I most definately hope that he will be able to, as if not, that will kind of defeat the purpose of eighter
    of us getting the game.

Thank you in advance for the feedback.

should be able to run it on low, the problem is the grapics card, cpu & ram are good enough for high settings.

Thank you for the responce, I was wondering, what kind of a graphics card would he have to actually get to be able to run it on atleast medium settings?
And it would be nice if it is taken into account that his budged is abit strained. Just wondering if it would be possible to get away with a semi cheap upgrade to make the experience more enjoyable.

For those of you wanting a gfx card on the cheap for GW2, geeks.com has NEW 4770s for 40$ with 10% code GEEKBERT.

    Doesnt get better than that.

medium-high depending on how much is going on, more inclining to high settings.

I was thinking medium to high depending on resolution.

This is a great deal for anyone looking to add a card or upgrade from the card their big box computer came with.

What performance will these two PC's push out on GW2?

    ebuyer.com/370436-cyberpower-commando-800-gaming-pc-ecc01110

Also all that power only on a 500w is tat dangerous or will it be okay? (for the second link.)

Also will they manage any future expansions?

Are you quite sure on that CPU? Run CPU-Z or something and tell us what it says.

Will this computer be able to run max settings on GW2 with high Fps? Its a lot of money if it doesnt..

This one would cost around 50 more but you could get a slightly lower graphics card if you dont want to go over 800, i think this setup would be much better for you, if you have a little extra a SSD would be a nice addition also, im getting my comp built on the dinopc website as they are at a reasonable price and i dont want to build mine on my own.
