Conclusion: GW2 Mesmer theme is that of GW1 death necromancer crossed with GW1 assassin. It has little to nothing in common with GW1 mesmer theme.

P.S. If you enjoy minion master theme, you should have been playing a death necromancer in GW1. It's fairly close to GW2's mesmer, and mainly differs in the fact that you needed to do more to set sacrifices up (but had more control over what and how you sacrifice).
if you played a death necromancer in GW1 you want to play a necromancer in GW2 seeing as you know, MINIONS ARE STILL THEIR DOMAIN. The clones that mesmers make are hardly minions, someone glares at it funny and it dies, that's not an effective minion in the slightest. The purpose of them is to distract the enemy from the real threat, you. It's more like playing an illusion mesmer in GW1 then how it seems everyone else played mesmer in GW1. In GW1 on my mesmer i spent my entire time snaring, detaunting, and distracting the enemy. SURE you -could- have gone super interrupt/control, i didn't, soothing images, ancestral visage, migraine, etc. fit more with how GW2 mes play compared to GW1 mes.

Is it identical? Absolutely not!! But then again neither is my baby (ranger). My god was i ecstatic that i wouldn't have to carry my pets skills on my limited tool bar!! Oh yeah, the whole pet mechanics are entirely different too.

PS: Shatters were also in GW1 much the same as they were in GW2, they just (to my knowledge) weren't used very much and weren't a main thing.

Getting quite sick of the mesmer right now :P Everybody seems to want to cover that class first... Genna Bain, Yogscast, IGN... At least I got some necro out of MikeB :P I want to see some more Ranger and Thief though, probably what I'm gonna play the most!

Exactly what I was thinking. Seems like there are only mesmers in the beta. ;( Want to see more of necromancer, ranger, elementalist etc.

    Hopefully someone will notice soon!

I'd like to point out two things where you're imho wrong:

    1. GW2 necromancer's main theme is conditions, conditions transfer and "powered up mode". Minions are an afterthought at best and absolutely not mandatory in any way for any facet of play - in fact most necromancers seem to skip minions alltogether because they don't compliment the condtions + death shroud as much as other utility skills do. In comparison, mesmers main theme is minions, and minions are absolutely mandatory for any facet of play. This is especially noticeable because essentially all mesmer weapon combinations have minion spells (as far as we know), while necromancer minions are all in utility spell category. And then there's the "class resource", which is minions for mesmers, and death shroud for necromancers.

    2. "Shattering" with mesmer in GW1 was a mechanic that allowed you to hex an enemy with an illusion hex, and then shatter (domination magic) one illusion hex for medium amount of damage. The only real use that spell saw was together with phantom pain to cause reliable deep wound on one target from range in spike comps. Death necromancers on the other hand had several viable builds where you would buff your minions with death novas, send them in, and chain minion sacs for some serious AoE damage and debuffs on the enemy. Just like GW2 mesmer does, only without the need to set up novas.

Lucky_ is on the spot once more. The entire clone mechanic smells of minions, you just summon them to distract a few seconds and shatter them afterwards, same as minions, summon them to bodyblock/meatshield with death nova and let them die or sacrifice them. Too much reliance on clones.
Imo, the complexity, the manipulation of the enemy options, heck, all things that made Mesmer so awesome and loved in GW are now gone.
