I thought this game was a horrible WoW clone, but

You bastards and the rest of the internet lied to me.

I started the up to level 20 free trial thingy today, and holy shit, I'm enjoying the hell out of this game. I started off with a mage thingy, and it was blah, so I rolled up a warrior, and looking at the suggested builds or whatever they are called, and I was like, "Hm, Dark Thane sounds like a DK with a shield." Not only was it a DK with a shield, but it had charge too. Instant tank boner right there.

Played him until my girlfriend got out of school, walked the dog, came back, tried the cleric, wasn't impressed. Thought about playing a hunter, and I started looking through the available talent tree soul things, and saboteur caught my eye.

That bitch throws bombs at people, then blows them up.

Took that as my main tree, then the fire rogue tree, because throwing flaming knives as well as bombs at people sounds fucking cool, topped it off by picking up bard for potential healing and group buff, because I like feeling useful.

Then I got out of the starting zone, and saw some scary ass tentacles come out of the sky. I ran my ass over there because I heard killing these was the main point of the came, joined the pubic group and we kicked ass.

    All in all:
On the fly pick up groups = win
    Potentially awesome specs = win
Free up to a point = win

Glad you're having fun? Heh, I haven't bothered with the game since I tested in the beta, but I might pick it up for something to do.

I felt that way also, until i had played it for a few weeks and realized it was a WoW clone.

no denying it's a WoW clone, it does feel very similar, but I think due to the combination of new world to explore and adventure in as well as the interesting spec combinations, I don't believe it deserves all that hate that I've heard about it. Had I known it was as interesting as it is, I would have tried it out years ago.

It really is a fun game. Played for a very long time but recently canceled my sub to save some money for moving out. Its really fun how there is always something to do (Everyone isn't just sitting in the main city waiting for the que to pop, they actually go out into the world and PvP and battle huge world events) and the community was great too. It is a lot like WoW but WoW was a lot like EQ so you can see how that works lol.

Don't let those people who say Rift is dieing fool you. Trion is doing a great job and Rift is going to be around for a long time. With something to always do and QUALITY content being thrown out faster than any other MMO on the market, you cant go wrong with Rift. Hope you keep enjoying the game!

Like it's been said lots of times the term wow clone isn't really relevant, they're just the same genre! People dont play Pro Evo Soccer and think to themselves "lol, 2 goal posts, 11 players on each team AND a referee? copy fifa much?"

Good to see positive posts though

I love reading these. It's a nice change from the vast majority of forum posts!

Yes. Upon your return, I will gift you a beautiful flower."

Yes it feels like WoW, but it's not horrible.

At the moment, my Necromancer Mage is level 41. I always did wonder what a Affliction Lock, a Death Knight ghoul and Hunter's Feign Death would play like

They are parts of the game I love, such as the level up whoosh, trying to get to the pinatas, rifts and Riftconnect.

But they are parts I am not found off, such as leveling. It's like pre and post cata wow at the same time. Maybe that's because I don't know my way around the world.

All in all, I like the game, but I am not sure if I like it because of the game, or because I'm not leveling another character on WoW. Only time will tell.

There is a big difference though, like you said football games are the same game and it can be said most fps are "cod clones" but anyways the point im getting at is most people will try different mmo's but if they are not different enough from wow then most people go back to wow since its way more polished.

Also with sub mmo's i (like most people) don't really want to pay for multiple mmo's since they require so much time.

Nothing against rift , you can't expect a mmo to be polished as wow since it took years and years for wow to get where its at now. I will probably try other so called wow clones maybe 1-2 years down the track when they work out the kinks.

I joined when the game first came out and left about two months in, but I just resubbed for a bit with my brother and I'm having a ton of fun with it on the Defiant side this time. Last time I had to be a guardian to play with people I knew. :/

Oddly enough, I made a tank reaver and a saboteur. 0_o

One of the best things about the game for me is that they are keeping the servers alive by allowing people to transfer to busy servers and by condensing them since it first came out. The game feels very much alive because of this.

I also heard they added a lot to the end game so i'm intrigued to what is there now.

And destroy pinatas is yay lol

This is nice to see but I will say, don't get too attached to sab (especially as enemies start hitting hard, the slow ramp up on damage hurts later on when leveling). Its one of my favorite souls but its currently by far the worst off rogue soul by alot. It used to be amazing at launch but it was slightly (if at all) OP and it was nerfed massively to the point of near uselessness. There are current changes on the PTS designed to buff the soul but they unfortunately don't do much of anything. There is still time to 1.8 so I'm still holding out hope. Sab is in theory supposed to be the rogue AOE soul. But I think unless they incorporate some ways to quick load charges, the soul will always lag behind especially in single target damage. The other soul you mentioned Nightlblade though is extremely powerful especially in PVP. It requires a bit of skill to play well but its alot of fuin in my opinion. And its come a long way, it was kind of a bad soul for awhile. Thats part of why I have hopes that Sab will get the love it needs. Honestly most of the rogue souls are pretty good right now. Only Bard and Sab seem to need a little help. And for Bard its partly the issue that support souls seem to lack a bit of an identiy in this game, in pvp anyways. Play a bard in PVE and you won't have much trouble finding a group.

I barded quite a bit in PVE when I was doing experts to gear up, and its pretty hard to understate the importance of Virtuoso. It basically gives you instant wipe immunity on a boss. Pop riff, virtuoso, then spam coda of restoration and your group is invincible till it runs out. It has a fairly long cooldown but it will absolutely save you if you find yourself in trouble during a boss fight. If you run a bard main spec, I highly suggest getting either a motif management addon or using one of the instant motif macros you can find on the forums because mnanually trying to manage all the motifs is a huge pain in the ass. Another thing thats cool about bard. If you supplement it with Riftstalker (up to about 30 in the tree) you can actually offtank in some of the expert dungeons if you need to. I believe 36/30 was the spec I was running and I pretty much never died. You won't die much in PVP either but you feel somewhat useless cause your damage will be horrible (justifiably) and your healing is pretty worthless unless you are using your virtuoso spam (save that for big pushes).

I have recently dabbled in this game and have to say I have enjoyed what I have seen so far. Its sad to see the community at large immediately label something as a failure out of the fear and malice of something threatening their little slice of the gamer world. Over all it seems very well put together and far better than the negative hype would lead you to believe. It is unfortunate that most wont bother trying something new simply because of what this or that person said. Sure it bears similarities to WoW but I honestly think you would be hard pressed to not find similarities to any MMO that was designed to be a true MMO in the sense that a FPS is a FPS. I wonder how many people complain that OMG there is shooting in this FPS.. again?!!

I dont look for the wheel to be reinvented, just a fresh well supported experience and I would say you will find that in RIFT.

Just call them a tool a move on. The reason why you call them a tool is because under someones plan 2011 was only supposed to consist of two mmo's. SWTOR and GW2....yes GW2 was going to release in 2011 according to people.

Here is how the flow chart works according to some idiots:
    WoW -----> SWTOR ------> WoW -------> GW2 + WoW

^ Notice there is no room in there for Rift, so eventhough Rift was a quality mmo with a pretty badass dev it got labeled a "holdover game" until something better came out. These are the same people that jumped on TOR as bandwagon fans then quickly jumped off and now cry TOR is a failure.

These are the same bandwagon fans who will jump on GW2, then jump off and claim it is a failure also, then claim a B2P game is a failure after they bought the box lol

They are called mmo content leeches and there are alot of them. Unfortunately they are concentrated in WoW right now and when anything new appears they swarm on it and lay their eggs and leave. Eggs btw is stuff like add ons, x-server LFG, nerfs/buffs and pretty everything else people say they hate with a passion.

You know the ones who cry for this stuff in their dramatic "I quit, but wish you the best" post. They are narcissist and have deep personnel issues where they need gratification from a forum posting to feel special.

TL'DR: A portion of the mmorpg playerbase are a bunch of tools and are ruining the entire genre

Yea if you follow the thread those changes are worthless, in fact it nerfed our already horrible single target DPS by 30%. Awful awful changes. I know because I tested them myself, live vs PTS my single target damage dropped by almost 50% and my AOE dps increased by only about 10%.

Somehow this game got bad rep, and a belief that it's about to die. I don't know why, guess it got a bad start for some reason.

This game is best mmo on the market atm, and it doesn't get the creds for it. It has everything you got sad about them removing from wow + developed and made even better and with more diversity (talking talent trees).
    There is a living world
The updates are so fast and delivered in good quality

Only thing missing is their plans for pvp in the future. They can't stay with the model they have, they need to add something extra so that r40 still can feel like there's something to do except ganking out in the world. If they fix it, and best thing is if they innovated something competitive that's different from what we are used to. Competitive doesn't need to be arena, they can focus on world pvp instead or well... surprise us and rest of the gaming world. With all the combinations of souls available in this game, it's a shame if they dont make use for it for exciting pvp. I really hope they do it. Still some time left til r40 for me though, might not reach it until gw2 is released. But in time I will, and I would really like to know what their future plans are. Hm, perhaps should add a new thread about that?

Yea, a WoW clone to a degree....but their class system is miles ahead by being allowing each of the 4 main classes an oppertunity to play a support role like tank or heals, and even buff/debuffer. I think if this game wants to create a true identity they should flesh out their PVP and make it truely unique.
