First off, I know that categorizing something as good or bad is extremely subjective and this is NOT what this thread is about. It's about WHY you consider you taste in music to be good/bad/amazing etc.

Please try to refrain from just listing your favorite bands/artists as an explanation.

I listen to a a lot of different genre's. So its pretty good/decent. I suppose(unlike some people who only listen to 1 genre).

Imo, to get a "good" taste in music, you need to try out a lot of different bands. I myself have tried out over 700/800+ different bands.

I have good tastes because I listen to music that has artistic INTEGRITY. You don't want listed bands? Ok fine. Lets just say bands I listen to generally range from Good to EXTREMELY GOOD at their instruments then. As well as not sounding generic.

If I LIKE listening to the things I listen to then how could I consider my tastes to be bad?

Unless I want to consider it in the face of its public popularity/appreciation but that is so irrelevant anyways.

There ARE some bands I listen to that I am not extremely proud of (HELLO BRING ME THE HORIZON, though it only goes for Count Your Blessings) but those are like, complete minority and the only reason it can happen is because they get embarrassing due to their terrible image.

I know some people who would admit to having poor taste, but that might just be low self esteem. Also you can list bands as long as that's not all you do.

I should also mention that I myself am a drummer, and do in fact know about music. I think that seperates me from Nickelback loving bad tasters. Being a musician yourself generally opens ones eyes to things non musicians don't understand.

Its in good tastes because of : SKILL. Innovation. Integrity.

Bands like for example Nickelback are considered of poor tastes because they are mediocre skill wise , not innovative at all they are generic , and as a result lack integrity.

However I should also mention, for instance... Foo Fighters are generic , but they have a respectable drummer and write in a way that delivers an enjoyable and catchy experience. So you can technically have a band be generic but still in good taste.

I should also mention that you can do any genre in good tastes or bad tastes. You don't have to be a progressive metal band to be in good tastes. For example Lady Gaga is an exceptional pop artist. Really original. LMFAO is a really BAD pop group. Their music and lyrics are insultingly bad.

All genres have good and bad.

My tastes are mostly generic and pretty boring. My eclectic score is 98/100 and my super eclectic score is 857/1000 according to this tool. Whatever that means.

It means your taste is very varied. But that tool only works if you scrobble all of your music on last.fm.

Me and my sister ( my sister especially) have the most random taste in music.

while I listen to alot of Rock music, and accoridng to my friends I have good taste but they also want to disown me when I also tell them I like things like Phil Collins, Lionel Richie, Wet Wet Wet, Chis De Burgh, Mike and the Mechanics, Richard Marx, Rod Stewert, Billy Joel and Elton John to name a few :P

I am not insulted, I just like some of their songs.

Here's a very short but instructive story:

A while back I was going through a friend's music, trying to set up a playlist for a party she was having later.

Me: "Wow, you sure have a lot of [insert popular band that I think is crappy]."
Her: /makes cringing face. "I know! I know they're bad, but I like them!"
Me: "Oh, ok." /keeps making playlist.

(I took the name of the band out because I don't want to start any arguments about that specific group).

From that very short exchange, I can learn that:

1. We all have our own personal taste in music
2. We can get along with people even if they prefer different music
3. She knew that the group in question is not supposed to be good, and she didn't care

From 3, you get to the question, "So why do some groups have the aura of being hipster or good or whatever, and others have the aura of being bad or crappy?" Ideas? Edit: the group in question is quite good technically and produced very well, so it's not that they make obviously bad music.

I'd like to think so, most of the music I listen to is pop from many cultures, American Pop, J-Pop, K-Pop, etc. and I love it, it lifts up my mood and brightens my day. But that's just me
