    Hi Guys,

Recently at work i've been trying to learn my way around Windows server 2008 r2. I've been using VMWare to emulate the server and have a look around. I want to set up a domain controller but as this is at work and we already have one i don't want it to link to our network. Is there anyway of running it so it won't attach to the network but i can still create the server etc? It's asking to provide a static IP atm but i'm worried about accidently putting it on the network without actually trying.

    Look forward to your answers.

    It won't.

You would need to individually add machines to the domain.

    Cheers

Use VMWare ESXi, you can virtualize both 2k8 and your clients within the same machine and not have network access, but Active Directory can be within the same broadcast domain as a live directory service, you will need to make sure that your clients are pro or higher, home versions of windows can't join domains
