They don't necessarily need to move forward in time. They can to go to before the first game as well. And it doesn't have to be in the Western World either. There's a lot of interesting periods and locations they can go.
This would depend on how they do it, and where they set it. It might be interesting to have it play in Berlin, since that part of WW2 hasn't been featured a lot in games. Originally Posted by muxx

There are unlimited ways they can go if you think about it. The whole 2012 and Desmond thing probably isn't the only story. Whatever they choose, I'm sure won't be boring ,as this one is already looking to be a step up from the previous.
