Reddit confuses me.

Newcomer to reddit, it's rather confusing to me. I understand the main idea behind it, I get the front page and all the other stuff clearly laid out for you, like 'Games' for example, but how do you find things like GW2 or WoW? (Subreddits?) I've tried the search bar but that doesn't work. Do you actually have to type into the URL '/r/Guildwars2/' :/

Yeah you gotta type 'em as far as I know. You can only discover some subreddits it seems by luck. Either someone links one or you just try something out to see if it's a subreddit.

after the "to" will be a subreddit that a particular article was posted to. For instance from the photo subreddit wow was shown. Otherwise like Dacien wrote, dumb luck or people posting links to specific subreddits, otherwise you can always try http://www.reddit.com/r/<type whatever here>

I don't see how new people would go to the site because the default pages suck.

Up and down voting makes it essentially self policing though. The community decides what is good.

Indeed the site spews a lot of junk but once you discover some really nice subreddits you like and learn to filter (or ignore) the content you dislike - it becomes a very handy/fun site which collects/creates content you find interesting or funny and what you would normally have to look from far and many corners of the internet.

Reddit has a lot of potential and some subreddits are great, but it also has a lot of very frustrating aspects. The commenting system in general is a total clusterfuck.

But then, I'm a Farker, so maybe I'm biased. :P

Some subreddits become circle-jerky though. /r/politics and /r/atheism are accused of this often from what I've seen.

Only subreddits that you're subscribed to will show up on your frontpage. By default everyone is subscribed to the top 20(?) subreddits.
