This is a thread to discuss about the music within each game that just sends shivers down your spine when you hear them. We all know that a videogame is really the sums of its parts and that music is just one of those parts, but its often the one most underestimated.
The right piece of music can make or break a scene, and can turn even the most dramatic moment into something silly.
So, this thread is dedicated to those pieces of videogame music that you just feel left a mark in you.
A slight warning to those less constructive folks, this is a vastly subjective topic, and what's perfect for one can be garbage for others. What one may consider the best track ever, another can consider it substandard at most. This is not the place to fight over what track is the best, just the place to reminisce and share what pieces of videogame music can stir something within you.
Also, if possible provide links to youtube :P share your taste with the rest of the forums.
So without further blah-blah, here's my list of Top 10 Videogame Music tracks.
1: Deus Ex. Specifically, the track that plays when you reach the DuClare Chateu. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E80Ff8CTbvk
Is just so beautiful, so stunning, this was the place were the most vast ancient conspiracy ran rampart across the 20 and 21rst century. As Niccolette says to you, this is where "old men played at running the world" and the music reflects this just perfectly.
2: Chrono Trigger. Specifically, Corridors of Time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_3imPeW_IA&fmt=18
This track plays as you reach a point in history were humanity lived in an Utopian flying city called Zeal. Its evocative of both the hubris of mankind who in their biggest moment of pride dared to suck the life of an eldritch abomination to power themselves into godhood, and at the same time, the utter sense of peace and tranquility of this magical paradise, were there was no poverty, no needs, no hunger. This track alone made me put down my controller and just close my eyes, roll back, and enjoy it for what it is: a fantastic example of musical perfection.
3: Mass Effect 3. Expect a ton of bioware games on this list :P because if there's something they do right, is music ladies and gentlemen. The particular song I'm thinking about right now is called "A Future For the Krogan". Normally one wouldn't think that a song like THIS would be the "motiff" of a race of warrior brutes that can be basically summed up as "orcs in space" but it is, and its fantastic because of it, since it reflects how the krogans used to be such a peaceful race, a race with culture, arts, values, and more to them than just fighting for blood or money. Fitting that this song plays presicely when you give them their future back. (The good stuff in that link starts at 1:10)
4: Jade Empire. I'm not gonna beat around the bush. I'm a HUUUUUUGE fan of Chinese and Japanese cultures, which I consider incredibly rich and wonderful. As such I hold in great stem this great gem from Bioware, perhaps their most underrated game ever. Their first original Intellectual Property, long before Mass Effect ever graced us with its presence. And what better way to exemplify its musical prowess than this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHYARoLPpDw. Strong, powerful, intense, and very in tune with the theme and ambience of the game.
5: Chrono Trigger. Yep, this game again, to me, this is THE BEST RPG that ever graced the SNES console, and we may as well make it the best RPG of the 20th century. Period. And this is one of the reasons why. Behold: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sr9-O...feature=relmfu
If that's not one hell of a world map music, I don't know what is. So peaceful and soothing, still today I have it as my cellphone ring tone xD.
6: Metal Gear Solid. Yes, not every game on this list is an RPG :P though most of them are. it seems to me that RPGs pay attention to their music a hell of a lot more than other genres. MGS is one of the few that do pay as much attention to its music. With these 2 being what I consider one of the best boss tracks EVER. To the point that when I'm doing Heroic Mode bosses on World of Warcraft, this is the music I listen to. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJqLQ...feature=fvwrel and of course, the special track for when you fight the eponymous Metal Gear: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPISn...feature=relmfu. If only other games could create such a vibrating, energyzing music for their final bosses.
7: Skyrim. I would be doing a BIG disservice to videogame fans across the world if I didn't mentioned Skyrim's mindblowing soundtrack here. Its so fantastic that I'm putting, not one, but THREE tracks here, because this game is badass enough to deserve it. Easily THE BEST RPG of the 21st century. Bar none. There's Sovngarde (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2uyWOlKGcM) played during the climax of the game as you enter what is basically Valhalla for the final showdown with the Dragon God Alduin. Then there's "One They Fear" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HAjE19IJwg) a song that makes killing those dragons one of the most climatic fights in modern gaming. And finally, the song we all heard for so many years in the trailer: I'm talking about of course of The Main Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEEI_PyqAnY). IF you didn't felt a shiver down your spine as the chorus reaches the crescendo, you are NOT HUMAN.
8: Shadow of the Colossus. ANOTHER greatly underrated game from the PS2. The plot is kinda weak, but MY GOD, if the gameplay doesn't makes up for it. Never before had it been so fun to slay giants the size of skycrapers with a dinky little sword. And when done with music like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSrV5--cua8 you kinda tend to remember games like this rather fondly.
9: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4. I'm amazed at how this game wasn't more famous. To me, this is the "Swan Song" of the PS2. The last greatest game that console produced before it sadly was discontinued by the PS3. Persona 3 and 4 have everything. A brutally hard difficulty, superb voice acting, great comedy+drama+horror+romance+plot, likable characters with multi-layered personalities and traits, and did I mentioned the most addictive combat system and difficulty ever to be found on a PS2 RPG title?. Of course, when the battle music is THIS its just the icing on the cake.
10: Bioshock. Ya know, I'm not a fan of FPS. I tend to consider them as dumb repetitive games with pointless violence, and subpar plot, not to mention that most of them love to reinforce wrong stereotypes. Which is why I was skeptical to try Bioshock at first. MY GOD I'M SO GLAD I ENDED UP TRYING IT ANYWAYS. Exploring the ruins of a ruined Underwater Dystopia as it is can be pretty awesome, but when acompanied by stuff like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEFIZh_Zscc its just..................... wow.
So there you have it, my top 10 videogame soundtracks ever.
Now its your turn guys and gals, share with the others what videogame music tracks you consider the best. And remember, as a highly subjective topic, pretty please with sugar on top, don't bash the opinions of others. This is just opinion.
/peace.
