    Milestone in Wi-Fi transfer rates.

According to this article Japanese researchers have successfully developed and tested a Wi-Fi device operating in the terahertz range and boasting transfer rates of up to 1.5Gb/s or around 375MB/s.

The technology does have a short range however, averaging only around 10m.

Thought it was interesting. Here's the link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-18072618

Really nice speeds but not even a home environment is suitable for 10m but the article says they are now working on improving the range
But soon after Mr Xi secured a third term, Apple released a new version of the feature in China, limiting its scope. Now Chinese users of iPhones and other Apple devices are restricted to a 10-minute window when receiving files from people who are not listed as a contact. After 10 minutes, users can only receive files from contacts.
Apple did not explain why the update was first introduced in China, but over the years, the tech giant has been criticised for appeasing Beijing.

That's very interesting, hopefully given more time to research their new development they can figure out how to extend the range.

Also shouldn't this go under the computer sub-forum?

Keep it here, if you move it to computer forum it will get filled with all geek talk that we normal looking users cant understand!

So it is 1.5 gigabits, not bytes?

I got a little excited, but then I read the 375 MB/s. xD

I can't think of anything you could use more than 375MB/s for, in personal use.

Even if you had all the bandwidth you want, do you have the space?
Because I don't think you do.

The US has the capacity, and technology, in place to surpass this but we aren't allowed to use it yet. One of the reasons why analog broadcast TV was shut down is because some of the different bandwidths are supposed to be switched over for use for wireless internet service.

It is supposed to be the next step and would move us away from relying on cell phone networks for data transfer. You could connect to your home ISP and/or cell phone service via a wireless connection that is much more powerful then current things like 4G. Both cell phone companies and cable companies will use the technology.

The only issue is the companies who own the leases on those bandwidths refuse to give them up. Even though they were shut down by the government the companies still own the leases and they are not required to give them up until the lease expires in a couple years.

Hell yeah. My router is less than 10 meters from my laptop, so that would be great.

But the question is, is your bathtub as well? I heard you are addicted to taking a foam bath with your laptop on the side!

I don't take many foam baths, but I do take my laptop lots of places. At least at home I could have blazing fast Internet.

    Meanwhile, in the land of wires;

    (Pretty old story now though)

Seems there have been quite a few advances in communication tech, what with a Chinese team creating a quantum entanglement link over a 16 km distance, and then more advances in wireless technology also coming out. Certainly is a good time to be in the development field!

Too bad you would be super bottlenecked by your isp's lines to ever get near the potential of that. (or do countries without shitty monopolized internet have much greater speeds than 4megabits/sec [~500kb/s])

And even then you'd need an ssd to be able to write and the speeds the data would be coming in.

From a just private regular use of internet I have a hard time seeing that I would need more than my 10mb/sec download and even though speed is always nice the same goes when im tranfering data at my home. Dont even think my HDs can shuffle data around at more than maybe 50mb/sec

Preeeeeety sure when someone says something like "I want to download the entire internet" that they're joking.

    Just a hunch.

Isn't that what 5G is supposed to be? Theoretically it should start to become operational in about 10 years.
