Trafalgar class you smartass bomber queen I always dreaded being forced to go on bombers, not due to the boats themselves but because of Faslane. That place is a shithole miles from anywhere civilised.

It varies, really shit housing is free, but you still pay for your food. Really good housing (single room, internet, en suite shower and toilet) May cost you £60-£80 a month.

the rent and food is taken automatically out of your wages each month, so even if you spend every penny you have on beer and hookers you still have food in your belly and a roof over your head. You can also choose to live off base, in which case you pay normal rent or mortgage, they wont charge for housing but still charge for food.

They do not charge you for food or housing when deployed.

If you are in a dorm, chances are you will be, get used to sweaty dickheads farting all nights and keeping you awake until 3pm. Thank fuck those days are behind me, get promoted and get a better room.

Sorry Rich, have to take umbrage with that statement. Paras and Marines are currently supplying vast numbers of lads to the Special Forces Support Group (SFSG) augmenting Tier 1 SF Units on Operations. Bootnecks are also doing a shit-load of counter-piracy Ops in the Gulf. Whilst we might be currently doing an infantry job in afghanistan, that really doesn't mean that's all we do or that somehow you can draw direct parallels with line inf and RM skillsets.

The reason for that is the extra fitness requirement for booties and paras, not to mention the other training you guys do (jumping, cliff scaling and beach assault). It is so much easier to draw manpower for those 2 units rather than train someone else up.

You guys are very good, better than my lads, but in open combat we are doing pretty much the same job. We can shoot just as well as you guys can, it's just we do not specialise.

Although special forces recruit a lot of people from Para's and RM, we still get our lads joining too. My unit had 2 people join the SAS last years.

Yeah I'm not saying Line Inf are bad in the slightest, also not suggesting OP puts application in the bin and goes RM either but there does exist a huge misconception amongst the general public (and a large chunk of the armed forces) that think the RM are just another infantry unit - mainly thanks to back-to-back Afghan tours.

My main concern is that lads will join the Marines under the guise of being "very fit infanteers" and quickly learn (once Afghan winds down) that our main role involves lots of water, Norway and mountains. However you slice it, the job opportunities to Marines are vastly different than those to our Army brethren... I'm not saying better, just different.

Yeah, I always enjoy working with you guys. When the shit hits the fan you always go aggressive and engage the enemy, something some of our allies do not do. Take away the mountain, snow and beaches however, and you guys are just as good as we are.

BTW, what IFV do you guys use?

Depends on role really. In Afghan it's the same as you guys - Viking and Mastiff predominately. On H9 we utilised Air Assets pretty well and managed to get in quite a large number of strike ops using the Chinooks to punch-in and extracting using the Mk.1 LPC - recall doing one of about 32km overnight with the CHUB! Also started using jackal on LRRs and MOGs to great effect with BRF / BPT.

In UK in light-role it's mainly Pinzgauer and again Mk.1 Boot although we have access to all the obvious Navy Assets - Seaking, merlin, etc..

Norway is BV's and Good ole pusser's planks and again modified Seakings..

Amphib role is LCVPs, Rigids, Orcs and canoes a la cockleshells!

Well look it France in 1939, they were not prepared. Now lets look at how many times the world has exploded? Ah here again I see, No times and nice use of sterotypes, good to reinforce the fact you are mentally weak

and no, I am not in the armed forces, I just have a great admiration for anyone that is willing to sacrafice their todays for our tomorrows.

On that note, may I where you are from?
Well, you claim "you always have to be prepared" so my guess would be you'd have some device to warn you about incoming explosion, no? Also, why would you need time to get to a station? I bet you'd have several stations built at your home and work place. Practice what you preach, mate.
You do realize that garbage collectors do more of "sacrificing their today's for our tomorrows" than the armed forces ever did for you.

Going from Uni with a degree into an officer position is very common and a great way to futher your career.
For someone who isn't in the armed forces you pretend to know quite a lot. Have you watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer? You remind of Xander Harris(wuss army freak).

Wait wait...you guy can buy hookers? is prositution legal in the UK?

Ive always thought a great way to improve the moral of soldiers, deployed or at home, would be to legalize (and regulate vigourously) prositution.

Especially when they leave a blue sticker on my bins because the lid is slightly ajar informing me that they won't collect any bin with a lid open thus leaving it festering in my garage for another 2 weeks. Legends, the lot of them.

Please ignore people like that, remember, the army needs cannon fodder too. The Infantry has some of the smartest people you will ever meet, but we always need somebody to drive or carry shells. Do not argue with these people, humour them and move on.

Prostitution is legal if you want to film it (loophole, making porn is not a crime). Anyway, legal or not, people will always pay for sex.

Dunno mate, probably a weight issue. Most of our kit (with the exception of Afghan) I can easily imagine being slung underneath a Sea King or Chinook, A Warrior however...

You seem very eloquent, so I am guessing you are an NCO. May I ask your rank and current job?

I am a Captain in a majors billet, I get my full majority next year.

"your bin was too full, so we wont take it, leaving it to overflow even more for 2 weeks" so fucking stupid. we actually ahve 2 wheelie bins though, stole one from some people who moved out accross the road, so we can now have double the amount of rubbish! \o/
