    We design the game!

In this sub-forum I see a lot of people with great ideas about videogames. My idea is that we should combine these great minds into one project to come up with a great game idea.

How are we going to do that?

    Step by step.
Each two or three days (depending how fast the discussion goes) we'll be deciding on one aspect of our hypothetical game. How do we decide? Everyone can make suggestions, and at the end of the time period, we'll be voting for the best suggestion (or the one you like most).

Discussions will range from genre to gameplay gimmick and aesthetics. I've got a couple of ideas already, but if you have aspects of the game you'd like to discuss, just say so, and I'll try to work it in.

The first step will be: GENRE.

So, what genre should our game be? Are we going to revive the Turn-Based RPG? Make an awesome Third-Person Shooter? Or a brand-new type of Puzzle-Game?
Be sure to explain why you think your suggestion is the best, because you're going to have to win people over when the voting arrives.

(I'll post my genre suggestion later, since I don't want to muck up the OP with it.)

Edit: Just to be clear: we probably aren't going to actually create the game. Best we can do is create a basic design document. It's more about the creative process and good discussion.

I would say a very sandbox mmo.

I don't see why we couldn't actually create the game. I know myself and some others around on mmo champion are game designers with friends and connections. Don't sell it too short, you never know...

Also sandbox mmo sounds good to me, as the person above said.

Sandbox MMO would be my choice. Abit dull to say with everyone else saying it, but since we are just choosing Genre, i do not have alot more to say for the moment.
The reason for choosing this genre is; I am a MMO addict, and i would like to have a very player influenced MMO. It should not have the same gameplay as Eve though.

I wanted to stay away from MMO as a genre, since it's (in my opinion) not actually a genre. You can take basically every game-genre and make it Massively Multiplayer online.

Personally, I wanted to suggest First Person Shooter. That genre currently is rather stale, and I think we can do great things to make something new. If we can avoid space-marines or modern militaries we're halfway into making an innovative title .

So entries so far are: "sandbox" and "FPS". Could people explain what they mean by sandbox? Especially once you remove the "MMO" part. And can "sandbox" be considered a genre, instead of just a setting- or gameplay-element?

Well, if the game actually gets made, all the better, but I didn't want to go in with that expectation.

What i mean by Sandbox is mostly nonlinear progression. For me atleast it's an open world where i can choose what i want to do, where i am not forced to progress through the exact same story as everyone else. That's what i meant, i do not know about the others though. I do like a story though just not forced down my throat.

can we set it as a non linear first AND third person shooter?
we can, say, set it in a post industrial time, everything ultra mechanical and creepy, rust everywhere.

For me, an RPG. Semi sandbox, like an older FF game as opposed to Skyrim/Fallout, with a victorian feel to it.
Plot - open ended with choices impacting on how the plot progresses, with varying factions whom you can join, which can alter the course. I'd build progression around a tree structure, example -Start at point A (i.e., prepare to infiltrate evil mages tower) > End at Point A (in tower, made dear), however have several paths coming from A to B to allow player choice. The main plot would be built up using these tree's. The choice of a WRPG with the strength of a JRPG.

I'd make combat go like nothing we had really seen before. Im getting ahead of myself, but heck, indulge me. I'd have base stats that all classes have. I'd have a base warrior/mage/rogue class, with further sub tree's within. I'd make each have the potential to play remarkably differently to each other. For instance a rogue having 3 sub specs, duellist/agent/assassin. Duellist is a smooth talking swordsman, who tries to sweet talk his was through the game, but can go toe to toe with people if he needs to. The agent is a non combat spec, using subterfuge, stealth, disguises and sweet talking to progress through the game. If he needs to take someone down, he does it through subtle moves like poisoning, traps or through the manipulation of others. The assassin doesn't fight persay, whilst able to talk his way through things, he primarily is never seen, when he does engage an enemy it is a 1 hit kill then vanish/traps.

This would need a "speech" system like Skyrim/Fallout/ME, allowing the player to influence others, through charm or intimidation. It would give the players a non combat option for progressing the game (the points connecting A and B would see to this), gaining XP from successful stealth kills/sneaking/poisons/persuasions etc. Agent offers a more open way, manipulating people, using disguises and traps etc, whilst the assassin stays in the shadows. You don't need to fight wave after wave of dudes with these specs. If you want a bit of manipulation, but still some sword play, you go the duellist.

Mages would have a simmilar setup, for instance a destruction mage for outright combat, an illusionist who uses teleportation/mind control/telekenesis/illusion to navigate the game. Could go into more, but you get the idea - non combat solutions to getting through the game, if you want it. Each quest will have combat and non combat paths to complete it, allowing for a unique experience.

I think we can add T/FPS to the list of genres to choose from.

And the setting will be decided on in the future.
