Anyway, quick opinion:
I listen to metal for the melody and energy it provides and so these are my stylistic preferences:

Best Subgenres:
Melodic Death/Power Death
Melodic Power
Symphonic Power
Viking/Celtic/Folk
Melodic Black
Melodic Metalcore (YMMV)
Progressive
Djent
Cyber/Electronic/Industrial
Gothic
Avant-Garde (Some of it. So bizarre it is awesome).

Worst Subgenres:
Thrash (I find it immensely boring most of the time)
Technical Death
Grindcore
Raw Black Metal (Awful production values with no melody? No thanks).
Visual Kei (Imagine Power Metal with MASSIVE cheese far beyond Rhapsody and imagine it sung by androgynous bad singers in Japan)

I'm not going to name five of each because I'm not that much of a metalhead and frankly I can't be bothered.
My favorite subgenres: Industrial Metal and Neue Deutsche Härte
My most hated subgenre: Well, not a subgenre, but the screaming. I fucking hate it. So any band that does that.

Best: Death, melodeath, black, progressive, industrial, folk, power metal, symphonic metal, doom and some avant garde is just brilliant.

Worst: Heavy metal, metalcore, alternative, christian metal (lol), thrash, glam, not genre, but most metal with clean (male) vocals is just horrible.

I wouldn't really be able to list my best and worst. I have 1 major rule with music though:

Have good vocals. As in, not screaming, growling, any of that shit. Proper singing.

As a few examples, I am a particular fan of Dragonforce, Nightwish, Alestorm, Iron Maiden, etc. Bands such as Cannibal Corpse are horrendous.
