D3 longevity: what WERE people expecting?

I played D3 for 2 straight weeks, sittin' my fat ass down every spare hour. Spent a good number of hours in the game, logging in 100 or so on my wizard alone. After 2 weeks of playing nothing but that, I got bored and went back to playing other games, too, much like I used to.

What happened to the days when you could spend $60 on a game, and if it lasted 100 hours or more, you were completely satisfied, you were elated. I understand there's not much content, aside from the increased difficulties, but the same could be said for D2, and people talk about how great that was. D3 will have at least one expansion, as did D2. D3 doesn't have a subscription fee, so you don't pay for it every month, it's a flat $60.

So yeah, just want to know what people were expecting. Did they expect that it would hold their interest for another 12 years instantly? Did they expect it to have all the endgame content of WoW? What went through your mind when you thought about how long you'd be playing D3?

The reason people expected more is that D2 provided more. They were just expecting it to be like it's predecessor.

I'll be playing for a very long time mind you, There's a reason why I retired from my previous game that's obviously in my sig.

d2 was played for 10+ years. In fact it's still being played. D3 will be forgotten by most in a month or two tops.

I kept getting the feeling that a lot of people thought D3 was supposed to be like an MMO or something. Usually those that had never seen a diablo game. As far as I'm concerned it's the exact same as D2 with some beefed up graphics, it was mildly entertaining on the first run through, though incredibly predictable, and it had as much replay value to me as D2, very little.

I played diablo 2 for 10 hours a day for about 4 years straight and I haven't touched diablo 3 in about 2 weeks. I don't think they could have possibly made a worse game if they tried. inb4 herf derf nostalgia

I guess just to be more on topic, I was expecting it to last a few years for me, but I can't even stand the game now.

Okay, not really answering the question about what you thought about its longevity, though. And did D2 REALLY provide more? I played it, and, I gotta say, D3 feels like more of the same.

Because they don't understand that Diablo 2 wasn't perfect on release. On release it was a slow, sluggish, repetitive game with item issues, bugs and exploits. Eventually it became the great game that everyone remembers it as. People are used to instant satisfaction these days or something and expect the game to be perfect on release despite that no Blizzard game has ever been perfect on release. Even SC1, which is considered by many in the community to be the most well balanced RTS game ever, was buggy and super imbalanced at release. Perfection takes time. :/

Yes, I know D2 was played for 10+ years. What I'm asking is what people THOUGHT they would be getting in terms of D3's longevity. But thanks for adding your personal opinion about the game without reading the original post, that's helpful.

See, I like that, that makes sense to me. Clearly the game isn't done being fiddled with.

I was expecting more. The incredibly slow rate at which you gain skills with a new character kills the replay value for me.

I expected the longetivity of diablo 3 to be pretty small, back when we sat for ages playing diablo 2, games had not really evolved in their multilpayer components. Now-days mmo's have evolved diablo 2-3's online play, to give us a bunch of newish, usually larger, more fun to farm, content, as well as a feeling of an online community, that I just didnt see diablo 3 being able to compete with (and it clearly didn't).

I had assumed d3s longevity would be 10+ years as well. I can't see the majority of people playing this game past a couple months. Hopefully people are smart and don't get duped for the xpac. Who knows...

I'd be more than happy to pay and play some more content later on, the trick is to not come in with prior conceptions of it having more "fun" gameplay hours than a normal video game title.

I enjoyed it for good 200 hours, and i'm going to continue enjoying it for as much when 1.0.3. and pvp patch comes out.

For me, D2 lasted less than that. I forced myself to get to nightmare act 3 and then i've quit and never looked back.

Sadly I always expected that a video game from Blizzard was not just a normal video game title. D3 is the first clear example and a deviation from their normal quality releases imo.

I got the same thing from starcraft 2, so that illusion was already broken for me, lol.

The majority of people didn't play D2 past a couple months either. The majority of people don't play -most- games past a couple months. D2 had a pretty lively scene 10 years after release, but the majority of people stopped playing long before that.

I had friends who played d2 for years and still do. They will not be doing the same for d3. I realize that's anecdotal but I think the long term popularity of d3 will be far less than it's predecessor.
