Sad that someone spent $100 on a single in-game item to be better at a game that got old 2 weeks ago, or sad that Blizzard is making exorbitant profits with a 15% cut on each of said sales?
im not sure whats sad about this? was there text in small print that had a short story of a sick old woman and her loyal dog, but then the dog gets rabies and has to get put down and then the woman is all alone?
Both really... Impulse buying along with instant gratification for ones self and their character.
I don't see why people are angry about the 15% cut, in the end if you're spending money you can't care who it goes to because for all you know it's going to a serial killer who plays D3 on the side.
If you're the one selling the items you're making money out of thin air basically.
It's only sad if the person sacrificed other necessities to pay for that... Like forgoing dinner a couple nights a week or neglecting a bill. Some people just have decent income and buying an item on D3 makes them happy. More power to them.
What did you expect to happen when blizzard announced a RMAH and the fees that would be there? That they actually would do it? Whats funny is those fees are less then what was initially announced.
Travesty in gaming if you ask me.
However, It funny how people accepted the RMAH without considering how it was going to work but still said, "Bring it on! I might make some cash." Oh how money changes everything.
Not as sad as this:

$1500 for a virtual vanity item that has no effect on gameplay.
who cares, are people so lame to buy ingame stuff for money instead of deserve them by playing you should get this 15% cut enough said!
It's sad that the guy made more than the game costs in a single sale? That's not sad, that's awesome.

No, the 15% cut goes to Blizz too, they charge you for taking the money out of their system. Perhaps they share a portion of this cut with Paypal, but Blizz charges the fee to transfer to Paypal.
On commodities yes, on all items they charge you a flat 1% for the transaction, then any money withdrawn from "B.Net Bux", is subject to the 15% Transaction fee.
@OP, you think that's bad? check out the English RMAH, Shamelessly stolen from here.

Do you have a clear source for this?

Some people have more dollars then sense. The whole point of the game is to find gear, if you just buy the stuff, what's left to do in the game?
It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the beans of Java that thoughts acquire speed, the hands acquire shakes, the shakes become a warning.

What's sad is how easy people judge others for how they choose to play the game. If someone has a high-paying job and wants to spend a few percent of his monthly salary to buy an item in a game, who are you to judge them?
Complaining about free money you got for doing absolutely nothing but playing a video game is pretty retarded. Living off daddy's credit cards has really dumbed down people in the US.
