Is Guild Wars 2 going to be worth it?

I understand there are a lot of threads on everything regarding GW2. And I've been drifting in and out of some of them over the last month occasionally.. And forgive me if I sound like a dick, I'm trying to see if I want to buy it is all....

I played Guild Wars 1, never got further than a level 13 Ench / Mesmer back when my PC would constantly DC and I couldn't sustain it graphically.. I now have a $3k computer and kind of depressed I didn't try for the open beta.

Question being.. Since I never got into GW1, didn't really get into it. Been playing WoW for 7+ years, D2 for 5+ years prior to WoW (or while still playing WoW) is GW2 going to be worth the $60 right off the bat? Or am I better off waiting for some reviews and to then make a decision?

I don't mind spending $60, but I would like to be told what is going to make GW2 make me say.. WoW sucks, this is awesome, and play a B2P (right? No monthly stuff just the box?) game.

Again, not trolling or anything, and I don't specifically know where to look which will tell me everything I need to know in a small bit of reading space. I hope I can get some good answers, I'm really tired of WoW and need something awesome to hold me for longer than D3, DX:HR, Rage, BF3, Skyrim, Oblivion, SC2, watching Anime lol.

So basically, you want a salesman to 'sell' it to you? a little lazy, aren't you^^

well I played on the first Beta weekend and I was addicted at once^^
There are so much gameplay changes, you should look for yourself if you like it or not.
    Graphics are awesome
The stories so far are pregnant with potential!
If you calculate the worth of a game by my means, the game should be worth the 60$ (1$ per hour played^^)

I could explain everything about the game but like you say there is already so much information and threads already available. Also it's ultimately your decision, it's kind of pointless asking if the game is going to be worth it when your tastes may differ from everyone else's.

I say you buy the game for the next Beta Weekend to try it out and if you don't like it you can get your money back.

For me the game is definitely worth the money, it's very entertaining and isn't a copy & paste of WoW which is what I was looking for.

There is this sticky here on the forums that has a lot of information... however it isn't small like you would want, but I still recommend giving it a skim because it gives more information than anyone here could possible give you.
    http://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/...iated-READ-ME!

As for whether the game is worth it from the start, most people here will tell you that it is; I will tell you that it is, but I will tell you that it is nothing like GW1 except for it's lore and universe and you might want to look a little deeper into it if you really enjoyed GW1's gameplay. You might not like the more action orientation of GW2 and it's fundamental mechanics. That thread can tell you a lot more.

As for "missing out on beta" you really haven't. In fact, coming up 20/07/12 - 22/07/12 there will be one final beta weekend where you can try the game if you pre purchase from their website. If you don't like it you can receive a full refund. I would recommend that after you do some reading, wouldn't want to waste your time with something that disagrees with you right off the bat.

Keep in mind that it is a beta though if you decide to do the "pre-purchase fall back on refund route", don't expect bug free perfect game.

Yes, I think so. I think it is important that many people try it when it comes out, and create their own thoughts and opinions on the matter. I shall say something I have said before. I think the fundamental issue is that we are constantly trying to categorize something, sometimes before it even comes out, and then label it with either good or bad, or left or right. Or even expecting it to fail. It does not matter to me whether it is black or white or terrible or astounding. I first look at the emotions the gameplay and the atmosphere both invoke in me; the elements and mechanics of the various spells and abilities; and some parts of the story I think are well thought through and put together. Unfortunately not many people do this.

This is the issue. Is it necessary to immediately disregard something based on one’s previous conditionings and memories one has from past games? No because then you are comparing. What was – was. You have good memories and experiences from your other mmo-rpgs; and that is absolutely fine. It is not wrong, or right. But if you are stuck in this constant state of comparison between A and B, then you cannot move on to create new memories and hence new gaming experiences …

Depends what you like. If you heavily prefer the WoW/RIFTs etc with gear and tiered progression and instances raids, then I'd say no. If you're open minded, then sure.. give it a shot! There's some great Youtube vids out there by known reviewers.

Right, no sub. Sustained by box sales and micro-transactions.

Like many argue, there's nothing to stop you playing both if you treat 1 of the 2 casually. I guess at the end of the day (coming from a former HC WoW player) GW2 captured my attention because of the huge potential it has. The lore could give birth to a lot of amazing PvE content, and WvW brings back some missed PvP elements from MMOs. I haven't felt the passion in WoW's development in the past 2 tiers.

    Hoped this helps, bro!

I did not realize I have a chance at another open beta. I will definitely look into some of the threads now, and take a peek into this upcoming beta. Thanks for the sticky post, I am kind of lazy at 5-6am sorry But I figure if anyone has the ability to sell a game in a short post, who better than MMO-Cs.

Read this as, Right, no snub.. I was like.. what? I didn't say anything bad!!

Sorry, I raided HC for most of BC, Wrath, some of Cata. I ended 7/8 HC t13 with a 5% madness wipe back at 5% nerf. Played mostly 10 man, did some in 25, and raided on 2 different characters for 7 days a week back in ICC.

Raid lead three different groups, and dabbled in pretty much everything but much preferred healing. I did PvP somewhat, never hardcore in WoW. I got too frustrated and would just rage like a 5 year old. So I try to avoid that if I'm by myself >

I like to raid, and if leveling is fun enough, or quests are fun enough, do those. BC had lots of fun dailies, did those. I am not an alts-holic because quests in WoW boooore me to DEATH.

I know this is super cliche, but no one can really decide this but you. Watch some videos (or participate) in the last BWE and read about how the developers want to direct the game in, and decide if that is your cup of tea.

I'm not really an mmo guy, but gw2 really hit me and has made me a massive fan just waiting for release, but I know gw2's playstyle isn't for everyone.

Sorry for the cheesy reply /shrug

= Yeah, you're right in that, there's no subscription fee! Fixed?

It sounds like you'd definitely find fun in GW2, whether it be through diversity in classes or just general gameplay. PvP is a lot of fun, too.

I loved GW1 pvp. Having a level 20 (since this was WAAAY back lol) with all skills and stuff able to pvp was fun .. Even if I sucked. And no Xenlol, you're fine, I read your post as if you were saying I SNUBBED something. I'm just tired

I'm going to go back to bed. Thanks for the input, hopefully there will be more (even though I probably don't need it at this point) later on when I check back. But I will give this a lot more consideration considering the BWE (Beta weekend?) coming up.

Ex HC WoW raider here (there's so many of us we should form a club, lol) and I couldn't wipe the smile off my face for days after I played a beta weekend.

Anyway, there is SO MUCH in this game - I mean A LOT A LOT A LOT! It's just huge. There's no way that anyone can tell you in one post haha And from what I've seen so far, It's the epitomy of easy to learn, difficult to master.

Here's a vid of a jumping puzzle - really different, really fun
(these jump puzzles - some with pvp, some in dungeons, some with monsters, some hidden behind waterfalls, it just goes on and on)

GW2 will give you more content and longevity than most other $60 games. It's certainly worth that one time asking price for hundreds of hours worth of quality gameplay. A lot of people spend that much multiple times a year on 5 hour games.

  17. #17
    Yes, it's worth it.

This vid was made over a year ago, Old but gold! :3

    Hi

    No. Alternatively, yes.

You're going to have to answer this one yourself as you know you best, and what kind of games you like.

That line made me LOL irl. Great metaphor. The whole game is pregnant with potential imo. Played beta and I love it.

Personally I'll be playing my Charr Warrior with my Ret Paladin on MoP on the side lines. It's jsut about making time for both games. I'm glad GW2 is coming out first and will most likely be out for 3-4 weeks before MoP comes which gives me enough time to settle down in GW2 and play at a casual and calm rate

To the OP: When trying on to decide on games that I haven't played personally I hit youtube and watch video after video of walkthrough gameplay and beta gameplay and base my purchase decision on that and whether I think i would enjoy it. Don't wait for reviews a Review is strictly that Company or Person's opinion of that game and you should know that as individuals we all have Opinions of our own and they can be vastly different from each other.

I watched GW2 Demo gameplay Gamescom 2008/09? (Charr Warrior Walkthrough), bought the digital deluxe on 10th April soon as it came available. Played the beta. LOVED IT!! Especially PvP and WvWvW (pvp). Booked week off of work for the launch week of GW2. No Reviews needed there.

Played MOP Beta, Love Ret Paladin/Warrior changes. Waiting to pre-order Collectors. I will be playing both MMO's for certain

Always wait for reviews. $60 might not seem like much to some people, but it is almost a week's worth of groceries for me. I now wait for reviews before spending money on games like this.

I am expecting to get GW2 and I think I will like it (from what I have read), but only you know what you will like. Wait for reviews. Read up on the details of the game and make a logical (stop listening to over-emotional hype) and informed decision. Then once you know more about the game you can make the final decision.
