Is it pathetic to go to the movies by yourself?

The question in itself is self explanatory. But heres some background information for the reasoning behind me asking this on the forums.

I am currently a college student and semi full time worker.

I just went and saw Ted at the movies by myself. It wasn't really a big deal for me because I occasionally go to films by myself. But the particular thing about this recent solo trip to the movies is that I ran into an old friend of mine whom poked fun at me when he realized that I in fact went and saw a movie on my own rather than with someone. The person in the other seat of his car gave me a weird look as well. I am assuming that some people believe that a trip to the movies is a group activity despite the fact that you are sitting in a dark room in silence.

I have always been a soloist when it comes to most things. I mind my own business, pursue my interests (Work and School), check these forums, and play WoW. However, If most people believe that someone going to the movies by themselves is either weird or pathetic, It might give me second thoughts when I go see the Dark Knight Rises and other movies that I am interested in. Which brings me to the forums to ask for your opinions.

So what do you guys think? Is going to the movies by yourself strange or seen as strange by the majority?

A tiny bit strange, sure. Pathetic, not at all. If you find it fun, hook it up.

I do it often. But then again my taste in movies is different from my friends. Maybe try find someone outside your normal circle who has a similar taste?

    God no....

Rule of Thumb: If the healer's HPS is higher than your DPS, you're doing it wrong.

Sometimes it's better lol... the friend I normally go see movies with likes to comment about everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) so I can miss things sometimes.

Going to the movies by yourself is fine, if people think you're strange because of it, then they're just dicks. On the rare occasion that I actually go to a movie theater to see a movie, I pick the least crowded day AND go by myself. Way more peace and quiet to focus on the movie then.

    Not at all.

No. Considering the other people I'd go with are obnoxious during movies, it's my preferred way of watching movies, whenever possible.

Though, like suggested above, finding somebody with tastes like yours might be a good idea too, if it really bothers you.

Not at all. There's nothing wrong with going by yourself. A total non-topic in my eyes.

    Pathetic...No?

I know exactly what you mean OP, it's something I never use to think about until a friend said "Really, you're going on your own?" and I realised that it was slightly weird but no one in the cinema cares or is even paying attention to you.

With that said I can't get over how awkward it feels, so I can't go by myself haha

No. I used to go to movies on my own every now and then in college. I was so busy I had to schedule people for lunch or dinner 3 weeks in advance and it was the same for some of my best friends. Sometimes I would get exhausted and wanted just time on my own. I liked going to a restaurant, movies or park on my own.

Don't find it weird at all. Sure it can sometimes be more enjoyable going to see a movie with a partner/friends, but sometimes it's just nice to have some time to yourself and watch a movie.

Think it depends on the movie really. Something like Prometheus is a pretty good ecample of a movie you can watch by yourself without it being made better by having company. But going to see a RomCom by yourself is a tiny bit odd. Much more suited to couples.

And i'd say if you go to see Magic Mike by yourself if you're a guy is weird. But you get the picture.

First off, no it is not strange. Why would it be strange to go enjoy yourself at a movie? It's not like you are at a carnival and you ride the Tunnel of Love by yourself. That would be a bit weird.

Secondly, you really shouldn't be bothered about what others will think about you. They are not there to make sure you are happy. Heck there are people out there that get their jollies off on making others feel terrible.

your friends a retard if he thinks u need 2 people for everything..
ask him if he needs another person to help him pee.

going alone is fine, its not required and its certainly not weird.

Your friend sounds like a jackass. If someone feels they can't do an activity as mundane as watching a movie without the company of others, then they either have some sort of social anxiety or are a tool.
There is a fine line between clever and stupid.

I don't find it pathetic in the slightest. That being said, I do however feel weird going to a movie alone and never actually do it. I have nothing against anyone who does, nor do I think anything bad about them, it just feels weird to me to personally do it. I do not go out to eat alone either unless I'm grabbing something "to go."

It's not pathetic. It's pretty much the same as being at home watching a movie at night on your computer or on your tv alone, the only difference is that you are in a huge dark room, with good vision, good quality and you get to go out of home, which is good! :P It's not pathetic at all.
